Pfitzy says: fuck no!

This isn't the fucking NRL. This isn't fucking basketball, fucking ice hockey, or fucking grid iron.

Its rugby for fuck's sake!

If you're not good enough, you don't win. And if neither team is good enough, neither of them wins.

If you don't like drawn Tests, then perhaps your journalistic gifts need to go elsewhere.

But well done for generating some clicks.

I agree. I think golden point is stupid.

Extra time is only needed when there has to be a winner (i.e. a knockout game where someone has to win to advance to the next game).

Well I'll stay on the side of progression and give the proposal my support.

Draws are fine for a 2 game series - for example the RWC qualifying series that will soon be played between Uruguay and Russia. But for everything else I'd prefer to see a little extra time given to try and find a winner.

Ultimately I watch professional test rugby to be entertained and I would find a potential extra 10 minutes of edge of my seat nervousness more entertaining than leaving it as a draw at 80.

Silly idea aimed to stir interest and sell papers. Nothing wrong with playing to a draw.

Also, am I right in thinking that the Wobs can draw the next game in the series and then potentially reclaim with the Bledisloe with a win at Suncorp?

Yes. Two draws and a win would win us the Bledisloe.

No fecking way. I've got to side with the Diveball advocates here. They see value, competition and tension in a 0-0 draw for a "regular" game.

This is not mungoball, or some other artificially manufactured for TV, caffine hit game where short attention spans of the viewers demand a result, or they are "unsatisfied".

The game is played for 80 minutes. If you can't score more points than the bad guys in that time, then the game is rightly equal, and should be considered a draw, as unsavoury as that may be to some punters.

It's a 6 game series though.

Why shouldn't you have a draw?

Yeah, not a 2 game series.

And you might still get a draw with golden point. You'll just get 10 extra minutes of edge of your seat rugby. Why is 10 extra minutes of edge of your seat rugby a bad thing? It would happen pretty infrequently.

I'd at least like to see golden point brought in for stand alone 3 match series and 1 off test matches..

I think golden point is crap in the NRL so why would I want it replicated in rugby union?

I don't think it does generally create edge of your seat finishes. If anything it promotes conservatism because the percentage play is to try and work the ball downfield to try for a field goal.

In rugby that would involve kicking the ball into the opposition half every time you get it because there is a real risk of giving away a penalty when trying to play expansively in your own half.

It is what it is

Even the mungoes are already calling for golden try because golden point produces nothing but barge-into-position for a kick.

o_O

Ignoring completely the previous 80 minutes of barge-into-position for a kick

Sounds like you're open to a 'golden try' then Pfitzy.

Golden anything is fucking retarded unless you're in a knockout situation. The NRL sold itself like a dirty whore (because it is) when their fans became as stupid as Americans; people who fail to understand that there are three possible outcomes to any game because MATHEMATICS.

Even the Americans abandoned the penalty shootout in the MLS. Don't see a need to resolve a draw in a league type situation especially when it's already well established how the match points work.

Then you also have to look at how it would impact the other teams in the competition. If South Africa manage to win their game in the regulation time by 6 points what happens in one of NZ or Aus got a golden try and won by 7 points.

Finally there's absolutely nothing wrong with a draw. I don't know that much about rugby league other than the fact that it seems to be the origins of some really stupid suggestions for changes to what in my opinion is a vastly superior game. I'd like Rugby to remain a superior game and not be dragged down to a lower level.

I'm not a particularly strong advocate for it (for the reasons that a lot of you set out above), but I'm surprised there's so much hate for the idea. Omar makes a decent point that at the end of the day it's just more rugby, what's so offensive about that? I have no real issue watching teams spend ten minutes maneuvering for a drop-goal, when the alternative is to just pack up and go home.

I couldn't really care less either way. I don't think the author could either.

I'm confident about one thing - it's divisive of opinion, there is always an opportunity to bring it up with hindsight after a draw and doing exactly that will sell papers. The author or his boss is aware of that. It's not even a real opinion - just a stock article ready for printing after every draw with a few spaces open to mention stuff in the game so it seems real.

What about just normal extra time instead of golden point? i.e 10 minutes each way and if the other team scores a drop goal or penalty you still have time to fight back and score a try to win it. If it is still a draw after twenty minutes then it stays a draw. I like that a lot better than golden point but agree we don't need either. Just leave it at a draw.

If we were the holders we wouldn't be complaining
