SA rugby to get scrum factory

Bloemfontein – The South African Rugby Union (SARU) took its first step towards establishing a scrum factory in Johannesburg last week.

About 12 heavyweights, including Balie Swart, Os du Randt, Toks van der Linde, Robbie Kempson, Eddie Andrews and Dougie Heymans, will have the task of ensuring that South African teams start dominating in the scrums again like they did in years gone by.

South Africa’s poor scrumming on their tour of Europe at the end of last year led to the establishment of a group of scrumming coaches.

The South African teams are also not dominating in the same manner as before at Super 14 level and Springbok rugby has lost its trademark powerful scrum.

Os du Randt and Co already started planning the way forward for scrumming at SARU’s meeting.

It was decided that the former props would not only impart their knowledge to senior teams, but all the way down to under-11 level.

“The basic principles have to be written down. We will write a manual about scrumming so that South African rugby has uniform guidelines that can be used from primary school through to international level,” said Heymans.

Du Randt has previously spoken about the need for a national scrum factory.

However, SARU have now got the ball rolling under their manager of game development Hilton Adonis, who convened the meeting.

Former referees such as André Watson and Tappe Henning also attended the meeting in Johannesburg.

Watson had earlier called on Swart to give South African referees some guidance on the scrums.

Great news, Oom Paarl. Don't want you guys falling too far behind the scrum superpowers like NZ and Aus. ;)

Think its excellent to give guidelines for fatties from a expert like Os to u11 level. If I look around at that level any helping guideline to coaches can be helpfull and something not only SA can benefit more but every rugby playing country.

I don't mind the idea. Just keep your sticky fingers off Australia's crop of great scrum coaches. :angryfire:

About time.

There has been far too little focus on scrumming in SA for my liking. We got caught out. It will take time though but there is a hell of a good crop of about 6 or 7 props in the mix at the moment not to mention those outside of the S14 main squads.

I feel a lot better about SA's scrum situation than I did last year.

Now all we need to do it let the right people know that just because you're a fat hooker doenn't mean you can play TH.

True, Blue, it will take time. Australia lost its top four or five THPs within two years or so 2001-03. An expert mate told me then that it would take almost ten years for us to recover. That said, RSA's depth of stores is far greater than Australia's could ever be.

The scrumming marker isnt SH anymore, you have to go north. Problem we have is that fatties usually get to their best when they hit 30, at that time we lost them to NH rugby these days.

Bloemfontein – Os du Randt is set to be appointed as the Springbok scrumming coach.

The former Bok prop, who helped South Africa win World Cups in 1995 and 2007, has already been handed a contract by SA Rugby, indicating that his services will be required as scrumming consultant from the first Bok Test in 2010 until after the World Cup tournament in 2011.

It is 99.9% certain that he will join the Bok camp later this year.

He has agreed in principle to help the Boks, but some of the finer details in the contract still need to be ironed out. SA Rugby are apparently looking for a sponsor so that Du Randt’s contract can be finalised.

Du Randt’s expected appointment follows national coach Peter de Villiers’s search for coaches with the x-factor on his management team.

De Villiers realised that at least five teams at next year’s World Cup may have their skills at the same level as that of South Africa, and that the contributions of experts such as Du Randt can be decisive in close games.

It was always expected that South Africa would call on Du Randt after the success that he achieved with players such as Wian du Preez, Adriaan Strauss, WP Nel and Coenie Oosthuizen.

South Africa’s scrumming has not been up to standard since Du Randt’s retirement and last year’s tour to Europe was probably the “last straw”.

His presence in the Bok camp will inspire the likes of Beast Mtawarira, Du Preez, John Smit and CJ van der Linde with confidence.

Du Randt and Bok captain John Smit are good friends.

Sport24 could not reach Du Randt for comment on Thursday. He is on tour with the Cheetahs and was travelling from Sydney to Canberra ahead of the weekend’s Super 14 match against the Brumbies.

Sport24 has also learned that De Villiers is not considering Smit as a loosehead prop at present, though the Bok captain’s form in the No 1 jersey has given his coach reason to smile broadly.

De Villiers has apparently already assured Smit that he will lead the Boks at the World Cup in 2011.
