O'Driscoll - 100 caps and concussions

Can I be the first to congragulate BOD on 100 caps for Ireland and personally thank him for single handedly getting us out of half of the deepest holes we have found ourselves or the course of the last decade! Ireland will never see the like of him on the pitch again...

Also jus a question to those of you who may know.. how bad is getting concussion? I mean BOD has had it twice in the last 6 months and it seems to be a regular occurance in rugby in general... i've been led to believe this is dangerous but what could develop out of successive concussions?

Depends on the grade of concussion but really its up to how the individual recovers. Very hard to judge long-term and some players who've had it bad (that Kiwi fullback Leon MacDonald) come back after an extended break.

The best treatment for concussion is to turn the player upside down.

We lost Flats to concussion. There are others who have suffered from it over the years and, as I understand it, once you've had it a few times over a short period you are more prone to getting concussion. A medico might tell me I'm talking rubbish but that seems to have been a theme a few times (and I recall having a bad year for it when I was playing). Mortlock had a bad year a couple of years ago but seems to have steered clear of it recently. McCaw is another. Leon "Panadol" Macdonald etc.

Oh, and well done BOD. I've not liked him quite so much since the NZ Lions tour during and following which he seems to have become something of a whiner. However, he is a quality player and there is no denying that he has been a talisman for Ireland for a long time.

Ye he seemed to get a bit of a going over since then, he lost the run of himself in the middle of his career and there are dodgy pictures to prove it... nobody wants to recall that long hair/goatee issue again.

Notably since he got his hair cut his attitude has come on a good bit... He's no Paul O'Connoll for pure soundness, let that be known. Then again all them Leinster lads are the same!

Since he got rid of her, he's cut out a huge amount of shit; now engaged, and his fiancée is, by all accounts, sensible and pleasant. This is true, a good woman solves many a problem... I dont know what that Shudders comment is about below, because I wasn't exactly talking the man up...

Good win on the weekend though, although the Welsh lads cant defend around the fringes.. twas an ideal game for O Leary, say what you want about the man he always takes on the responsibility and he got the dividends of it on Saturday.

Great player for so many years. Was the best outside centre for some time. But he wasnt always! The thing i hate a about BOD is that he takes the glory away from some other great outside centres that have been just as superb. For instance i believe Mortlock had a time when he was the best, and i also rate Conrad Smith as being just as good. But having said that he was definitly a consistant player and does deserve a lot of praise, I wouldnt be dissappointed seeing him on a world team but i would be much more happy if people debated and questioned who was the best outside centre more with the likes of players such as tana umaga, mortlock and conrad smith.

Ye I guess when you consider how many of the ten years of his career he has been consistently at a higher level than others his legacy is hard to question.. Im not sure that he takes away from these players as most people would recognise that they were briliant especially Umaga and Mortlock in my opinion. Although I thought one of the Irish pundits made a good point this weekend, Irish rugby has taken a step up in recent times, im not saying its as good as a tri nations Southern hemisphere team because we are not, but we are more confident in our own abilities, competitive, the playing base has increased in size and our provincial teams are filling out 80,000 seater stadiums on a consistent basis. To a large extent this is due to the global profile of Brian O'Driscoll... I'm not saying he was the best outside centre of his generation, because that would be a bit of a subjective argument, he's just made a lasting difference to Irish rugby as a whole.

The reason he gets the plaudits in my opinion, is that he is so creative. He has such good vision, and can really read the game on the fly. He may not have had the hard running game of Stirling, or the rugged defense of Umaga but his nous for the game is outstanding. He plays as a distributer as well as a hole runner and always backs up putting himself into space. He has done so many things on a football pitch that others haven't even thought of. I would say without doubt he is the best 13 of the last decade, and not just for Ireland for Leinster as well. I made a thread while ago posting up some of the said video's where he flips games on there heads.

In regards to the chat involving his ex missus, everyone knows that rule. You have to slay the dragon, before you get the princess.
