Newington 45beat Oakhill 19
In a performance that was far from convincing New ran in 7 tries to 3. Newington started the game with apparent complacency that enable Oakhill to score two soft tries. Also credit must go to the Oakhill defence that stopped New backline from going directly to the try line early in the first half.
Nevertheless New built up some momentum to score 3 tries before the break. But their first half performance was disappointing in the extreme.
This was due to the lethal nature of the newington backs when they had the ball in hand. But were simply unable to convert attacking moves into tries.
The second half proved to be a better effort with four tries. The tries here were more skilful and reflected the power,pace and skill that Newington has with its backline. However, the overall team effort was inconsistent for this match. Greater ball control, discipline at the breakdown and a more focused desire to maintain the momentum are all areas of improvemrnt for the New 1st XV. On a positive note if New can score 7 tries in such an inconsistent effort they possess a undiscovered potential to be an extremely challenging side.

Good game from Joeys part from dodgy lineout - and flyhalf Wilkinson was passing like Larkham, which launched several attacks, some of them lethal. The backs were as slick as snot on a doorknob and opponents will have to deny them quick recycling this year with some counter-rucking that is powerful and early.
Not the biggest forwards but they are manic and hard young men.
Knox disappointing - they'd get in promising situations but their handling errors were rife - and they couldn't get success from the maul either though they looked menacing at the start of them.
Knox looked rusty.
He did well. I asked the coach about him before the game and he said that they weren't sure where to play him. He performed like a stepping 12; playing between 10 Wilkinson and 13 Jaffer-Williams will be good for his game.
Dalton played like a pig-dog which I like in a 7; and 8 Tuinakavadra will be a menace to opponents if he holds onto the ball at the end of a run; 6 Ashurst is not the worst either. SJC will have a fine backrow this year.
The two wingers looked excellent and fullback McTaggart, a halfback last year, did a fine job in his new position, which was vacated by Barnes who will miss the whole season; alas.

Shore v Barker @ Northbridge
On a perfect day for rugby both schools met for the first time in 10 years at Northbridge.
Following a close 2nd XV match which finished in a 17-17 draw anticipation was high for a good clash, despite the fact Barker were missing a few due to injury.
The game began with Barker kicking off and immediately returning the ball the Shore 15 (Luke Rixon) showed blinding pace to accelerate through a gap and then arc past the fullback to score under the posts within 10 seconds. Which incidentally is about what it takes him to run the 100 metres. 7-0 to Shore and the game hadn’t even yet begun.
You would have expected Barker to not kick the ball after Rixon’s first try but another kick midway through the second half saw a rare Shore mistake and Barker pounced on a loose ball to score under the posts (Van Woerkem I believe). Scores were 7-7 and we had a game.
From here the first half was punctuated by whistle blowing as the referee found fault with the Shore scrum in particular. Eventually putting the 3 (Ben Furby) in the bin for repeated infringements at scrum-time.
Shore continued to get hammered in the penalty count for the remainder of the half, but once it was 15 players each on the field Shore swooped on a Barker error to see 10 (Harry Wallace) score in the northwest corner. A great conversion by 12 (Max Sinclair) saw it 14-7 and that was the score at the break.
The second half was dominated by Shore with their backs showing some silky skills and pace (there is no substitute for it) that Barker had no answers for.
They scored 6 tries in total. Rixon scored his 2nd from a deft inside ball from Sinclair not long into the half. Then 6 (Aaron Doyle) finished a neat blindside move after receiving a great pass from 2 (Ed Collard). Barker didn’t stop kicking and 11 (Ed Gregory) scored a great solo try beating the chasers and tip-toeing down the sideline to leap over the defenders and place the ball down one handed whilst airborne.
Rixon got a 3rd from a sweeping backline move before 8 (Robin Allen) finished off a long-range effort from 13 (Hamish Sheehan) whom was ankle-tapped just short of the line and popped it to Allen to fall on the simplest of meat pies. The last try was to Gregory whom finished off a neat break down the left wing scoring in the corner.
The Shore team will be very happy with the improvement from the previous week against Cranbrook. The line-out was a 1000% better than the week before. The forwards began hunting as a pack and there was less one-out running. The backs finally saw some ball and utilized the speed they have out wide.
Barker will need to get some of their stars return from injury – particularly in the backs if they are to be a force in this years CAS comp.
The Barker team named Shore No. 11 – Ed Gregory as their player of the match at the after match speeches. I would say 15 - Luke Rixon could consider himself unlucky not to snatch this award amongst a host of Shore players worthy of note including 13-Sheehan and 1-Edwards.

How good is that Jaffer Williams ... Anyone who is a serious contender in 2016, is going to need to find a way to shut him down .
Not sure how far he went last year in terms of reps, but he is a shoe in for Aussie schoolboys .... Not sure what other gps back lines are likely to come close to joeys
