Match Notes: The Canberra Vikings travel to Perth in search of their third win of the Buildcorp NRC as the side builds on its solid start to the season. Perth are desperate for a win following defeat last weekend to the Sydney Stars at Leichhardt oval.

McGillivray Fields host this match between the team that has probably been the most impressive so far and the one that has probably been the most disappointing. Whilst the Rays have had to face number 1 and 2 on the ladder (this week they face number 3), their 2nd round loss to the Rays was really one that got away for the 2014 Grand Finalists.
The Vikings have travelled along fairly untested so far, in a way that has been eerily similar to the Rising of 2014, having scored bonus point wins in both of their games this season. Their challenge this week will be trying to get their head around who they will actually face in the Spirit side, as the Perth unit continue with their rotational tactic.
Key Match ups:
I have to chuck a caveat in here as this is undoubtedly the hardest match up to do in advance of teams being named. I’ve failed in my guesses as to the Vikings team twice in a row now, and the Spirit is just too hard to pick given their policy of mixing teams up every week. But let’s give it a go.
Nigel Ah Wong has been terrorising opposition in the early rounds combining his pace and size to wreak havoc on defensive lines. In both those games he’s had about 10kgs (and 10cm) on his direct opposite number. This week we could see Junior Rasoloea finally match him for physicality for the Spirit meaning Ah-Wong should not get it all his own way in defence nor attack.
Who would have thought that the NRC will end up being such a breading ground for props? Australia currently has a group of props coming through that should have members of the Front Rowers Union beaming with pride. This weekend we get to see a few more of them bumping heads (and other body parts) in 22 year old Ollie Hoskins (off the bench this week) and 21 year old Allan Ala'alatoa. The NRC is providing these guys access to high level coaching and competition for an extended part of the year, which is assisting in their set piece development but also enhancing their general field play.

Vikings win 26 - 23. Spirit score an unconverted try in the 79th minute.

Very poor game management at the end by the Vikings. Two or three minutes to play and 8 points in front, Toua fields a kick through by the Spirit and then tries a chip kick in return. Just gifts the ball back to the Spirit who then proceed to score what could have been a game equalling try.

Only way the Spirit could get back in the game then was to give them the ball, which Toua did with his poor kick. Keep ball in hand and play the game out.

Very weird call to take the 2 at the end by the Vikings. Sort of wish it cost them in the end.

Entertaining game....

I love the fact we have a strong and growing rugby presence in WA - have they found the right balance - could say one wonders with results this season - but crowds seems okay and playing school boy star like Joost is just - well unbelievably progressive....

Kinda like what WA rugby doing....something about potential there
