Wallaby Man

Yes - quite small and 2/3s full average is impressive - but once again, this is Club Rugby and there is tribalism (that word again) in the support.

They have Pros, Journeymen, U20s Players, and workhorses (who'll never player international) all mixed up in that league playing against each other - why we can't manage the same thing here as opposed to trying to concentrate our talent into four (was five) sides in Super Rugby is beyond me.
Look I’m all for a change in format here as I believe Super Rugby is busted and is contributing to some of our issues. But you can’t really call these clubs “club rugby” in the same terms we do. The English sides for example don’t have any juniors, their academy sides are made up of players invited into the program and haven’t run an amateur program for almost 30yrs and even then it was ‘shamatuer’. They are more like the Reds and Tahs than like Manly and Eastwood.

Very simple - if the Super Rugby players moved to Club Rugby it would be identical. And btw Club Academies in England are brutal - no cronyism - meritocracy; if you don't meet your KPIs you are out and replaced - Super Rugby Academies (NSW) choose players based on Gen Blue but never jettison the poor ones.

At Easts Colts 1s this year the BackRow JWB wasn't even 2nd choice, let alone 1st choice for Colts.

There is a reason England won U20s WC this year; Australia U20s picked the wrong players and suffered for it - beating SA in the 5 to 8 playoffs is no kudos for Aus or SA.

Swinton cops a 5 week ban, downgraded from 10 due to mitigating circumstances (guilty plea, conduct before/during the hearing and show of remorse). I think he can probably count himself very lucky to get a 50% discount without a clean record to lean on.

What we’d do for Sione Tuipuloto to play for the Wallabies right now.

It's crazy how shit we are at identifying and nurturing talent. We actually produce so much of the stuff we just don't have a fucking clue what to do with it.
We have spoken about this guy ad-nauseam. He was clearly pretty talented but was not a standout at Super Rugby even compared to his domestic competition. Guys like Billy Meakes even looked better.

He wanted a pay rise but at the time it didn’t make sense to give him a Wallaby top-up. We simply don’t have enough money in the game.

I think our biggest issue is nurturing talent rather than identifying it; and I largely think that some of these overseas guys improve purely due to the fact they are playing more rugby game.

Tuipuloto played his first test for Scotland after starting three games for Glasgow. He was in the six nations side in his first year there.

Whatever it was that turned him from reserve Rebels player to a starting international player, it wasn't more game time

Coaches. We spend so much time talking about players, it's the coaches that are the key here. On the upside, it seems our 4 Super Rugby sides are better positioned now for coaching than they have been for a long time.

Isn't this the exact thing that I said? I said identifying AND nurturing. Plenty of examples of missed talent and probably even more where we fail to nurture it properly.

He barely got a game despite impressing whenever he did get a chance, constantly beating his first man. Great attitude, positive and humble. Then went to Japan to find confidence before earning a chance in Glasgow.

"He wanted a pay rise but at the time it didn’t make sense to give him a Wallaby top-up. We simply don’t have enough money in the game." No, he wanted opportunity and wasn't getting it. Simple as that.

Top 14 is getting interesting. Toulouse have now lost two on the trot without their fabled Dupont. He has been called back from holiday early and I assume will come straight in to face a pretty Australian Clermont this weekend. It's interesting, Meafou doesn't look great in a team that's not on the front foot. But Bordeaux and La Rochelle are both top of the table with 4/5 wins. But there's some decent competition everywhere, Vannes, bottom of the table, nearly beat Owen Farrell's Racing 92.

Yes, Toulouse were poor against BB and not just for the want of Antoine.

He was identified he just played for the rebels. Where talent goes to die.
