I don't think a skills coach deals with defence do they? He might very well be as good as Muggo the Mungo was at doing the defence at Wallaby level for ten years.

That was the 2001 Lions tour right? That was about the only time Nathan Grey got a hand on O'Driscoll in the series. The Irishman made him look silly in the first test from memory. Not that Grey was totally bereft of skills. I always thought he had a prodigious kicking game including a big left boot.

yep, Grey got his hand (elbow) on Richard Hill though. In a match turning 'tackle'

Speaking of which, have you seen pictures of Jason Little lately ? He looks to be in his early 50s.

Hmmmm, yes, where were we ? Ah, skills coach. Yes, that'd be like hiring Huia Edmonds as scrummaging coach. His only coaching experience is coaching the backs at the Japanese side he's with. Its not like he could help with kicking skills either. What's Cliffy Lyons up to ? Then again the coach is Rod Macqueen, the master of crash ball recycling, so it could make sense to have an expert on deck.

Perhaps the Rebels are redefining the term "skills coach". If it didn't have the established meaning of catch-pass ect it could really mean anything.

On another point Grey has been in professional rugby set-ups for a very long time and as such would know alot about the skills, even if he didn't necessarily posses them.

grey gave the wallabies and tahs massive go forward by jus running hard and straight, its a simple skill thats been missing ever since we've played around with the nz second 5/8 idea...
thats why people raved about carter in the tahs a few years ago
thats why staniforth was the shit at inside in the forces debut season
there is enough fancy footwork in the outside backs ffs... sometimes someone needs to jus tuck it under there arm and fkn run!

The second 5/8 concept is hardly new in Australia, we've been doing it for years. The outside centre IMHO is the one you want to have the straight running and line busting ability, because it creates space for the guys outside. They do need to pass the ball though, something that AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) is criticised for not doing. Imagine if we had two blokes in the centres playing that way.

no one said the second 5/8 is a new concept in Australia, also a inside centre with straight running and line busting ability also creates space for the guys on the outside........

i realise the concept of a second 5/8 is not new in australia but i do think there has been an increased emphasis on it the last few years..

i think a perfect center combination involves a straight running and line busting inside center with a ball playing-passing/offloading outside center> i think the reds backline this year was a perfect example of this
grey and herbert were always a favourite combination of mine
second option to this is a ball playing inside center with a mortlock type outside center

Of the two, I prefer the latter option, as you have the hands and creativity (and also a boot) to get through traffic in the midfield and the ability to straighten up or clean up crap ball. A physical O/C can also help at the breakdown and put the hurt on in defence. I thought Herbert was an excellent O/C for Australia, but partnering him with Grey didn't offer enough in attack. But that's a personal opinion.

We've tried the line busting I/C in recent times and I reckon Staniforth is the only one who has done it well in that period. We've tried Morts and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) at 12 and it didn't really work.

why staniforth was moved away from inside center for force and never to be returned has amazed me. i know the idea was to have all the best players on the park but.. man... he was fukn awesome there
i agree hes the only one whos done it well there in recent times

Yes but do you need one guy on your coaching staff to teach just that? I doubt that.

Baffling appointment. Maybe he studied the stuff he wasnlt good at so hard that he's brilliant at telling other people how to do it?

Imagine a centre pairing of Carter and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper)... That'd have the defence in 2 minds...
