Hugh McMeniman ruled out of the clash with the Brumbies
Article from: AAP

April 30, 2009 11:45am

THE Queensland Reds have been shattered by another injury blow with Wallabies forward Hugh McMeniman ruled out of the clash with the Brumbies.
McMeniman injured his ankle early in this morning's training session at Ballymore and has been given no chance of lining up at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.

Last-start upset winners over the Blues, the 13th-placed Reds are awaiting a further examination to determine the seriousness of the rangy blind-side flanker's problem.

Queensland coach Phil Mooney has brought Scott Higginbotham into the Reds back-row while out-of-favour No.8 Leroy Houston has been elevated to the bench.

The Reds' last back-to-back win was on April 15, 2006 when they beat the Bulls 20-19 in Brisbane after sinking the Cats 23-16 the previous week in South Africa.

Queensland: Mark McLinden, Peter Hynes, Digby Ioane, Berrick Barnes, Brando Vaaulu, Quade Cooper, Will Genia; Ezra Taylor, Poutasi Luafutu, Scott Higginbotham, James Horwill (capt), Van Humphries, Laurie Weeks, Sean Hardman, Greg Holmes. Res: Saia Fainga'a, Jack Kennedy, Adam Byrnes, Leroy Houston, Ben Lucas, Charlie Fetoai, Anthony Fainga'a.

If you told me prior to the start of the season MMM would only miss one game injured, I would take it. Even all three remaining game injured would have been a good bet.

The problem will come when - if - Houston gets on the field. Hopefully he can show us all what he can do when he can hold onto the ball.

By the look of him, it may be too much KFC grease.

HB & Houston will both be looking to impress after great starts to the season only to be dropped later on, I expect big games from both.

MMM has only played 1 good game at 6 this year & that was last week in the wet.

Oh Higgenbottham, I checked the missed tackle count, and he sure is up there, but MMM isn't fat behind unfortunately.

Gees, he goes all out doesn't he? 6 months out of the game. Not a good time to be renegotiating. Just ask Dunning.

Wallaby and QR Reds flanker Hugh McMeniman faces up to six months on the sidelines after suffering a painful ankle injury at a Reds training session.

Scans revealed that McMeniman will require an operation and a lengthy period of rehabilitation after tearing the peroneal retinaculum, which binds down the ankle tendons.

QR Reds medical staff say the injury is extremely painful and will require 6-8 weeks of recovery after an operation to repair the tear before a lengthy rehabilitation process to strengthen the ankle.

McMeniman is renowned for playing the game of rugby at full tilt with seemingly no regard for his own welfare, but Head Coach Phil Mooney said the injury occurred in a simple warm-up drill at training.

"It was one of those innocuous injuries where in a warm-up drill he changed directions and felt something in his ankle go. It is tendons in his ankle that are separated and it requires surgery," Mooney said.

?He?s such a great player that plays with no real regard for his body and then suffers what appears to be an innocuous injury."

McMeniman?s place in the QR Reds side to play the ACT Brumbies at Suncorp on Saturday has been taken by Scott Higginbotham.

With the rumoured return of Rocky, and others throwing their hands in, MMM could end up way down the pecking order after the next 6-9 months. Ankle injuries are buggers too. Shame, just when we all thought he had found a good batch of Araldite.

It may be a blessing in disguise for us. Ala Dunning, no NH Club will want to sign him (I would think) until he proves he can run around a bit, so perhaps that narrows his options and keeps him in Oz?

Faaaarrrrk I was hoping it was just a bad sprain, so no tri-nations for MMM again.

He must have ran over a chinamen.

yes i agree noddy, is it possible that these injuries to braid and mcmenimen could be a good thing for QLD int he longterm..

I believe quite firmly that McMenimen will stay, QLD have stood by him in what has been a tough past few months, i believe that he will want to repay that faith.

Must not have been as bad as 1st thought, this from foxsports today (07.05.09)

McMeniman still has not given up hope of taking part in this year's Tri-Nations series even though he has been told it will be another eight weeks before he can resume running.
