Sefa is still out with his broken leg from South Africa tour. Think the forecast was 12-16 weeks so wrapping him in cotton wool is fine with me.

Otherwise with little red, I'd imagine there's some injury that we've not yet been privy to.

So from the list there, there is 16 Rebels contracted players for the rising.

I thought I read that this year the amount of contracted players per team was being lowered from 15 to to 14.

Is this not the case, or what's the deal??

Siliva is with either the Rays or the Rams, think he signed with one then switched to the other. Think Hanson will either be allocated to a Queensland side or not at all, given there's 1 or maybe 2 games before the Wallabies go to the USA before the World Cup. Toby may end up being the same.

I can't say anything about more re: front rowers, but I'd think that the EDS squad guys like Uelese would probably be training with the squad most weeks so they would be on call for injuries and such.

The Rising were a successful disappointment in 2014. Having won all 8 round games with a bonus point in each (scoring 3 or more tries than their opponents), they could not score any more competition points, so it was such a let-down to lose the semi-final to Perth Spirit. Looking back, a loss or two during the home and away season would have kept them (and us) a bit more grounded.

Don't get me wrong, it was an absolute pleasure to watch a Melbourne team win and win so well. Personally I felt there was too much reliance on the Rebels players, so when several became unavailable due to Wallaby selection, the Dewar Shield players were less prepared and ready for the step-up.

So, how do I think the Rising will go in 2015? The squad, while still having 16 Rebels, doesn't look as strong. I think we'll miss PAE, Stirzy, Mitch and #SuperSefa (who was only a Dewar Shield player last year), but the squad is still very decent and I think a year on the Dewar Shield representatives, especially the returning ones, have a better idea of what is required and are more ready for the higher intensity. Hopefully.

I feel wins will be harder to come by, but that may not be a bad thing. It seemed to me last year that winning was a much higher priority than developing local talent. Don't get me wrong, I love the winning, but we should also be taking the opportunity to bring through some Victorians.

Can't wait - I loved the NRC last year and look travelling to several home and away games.

What will help this year is not losing Luke Jones, Tom English and Sean McMahon, 3 of their best players right before the semi.

Exactly. That did it. The way it looks, at best Sean might make the RWC squad, but if not, all 3 are available for the entire comp (unless there is an emergency injury replacement required for the Wallabies).

The chances of our allocated Wallabies missing out on RWC selection are sadly high, but excellent news for the Rising. We have at least eight players who can play 6 thru 8 - envious. I'm worred that we're msising Toby and I noticed Higgers has popped up at Brisbane City.

There's some good Vic talent coming through the ranks; would love to see how Justin Masters goes at this level. Fereti and Sione look good prospects, but probably a few more seasons away.

Who wants a crack at a starting team against QLD Country?

With news yesterday that Rabodirect is ending their wonderful support of Rebels and therefore Rising, Rising have a new sponsor on front of jersey - Direct Connect, who organise things for people who move such as removalists, connecting gas, power, pay TV etc.

I was actually thinking St George might jump ship down there as well.

Melbourne Rising Head Coach Zane Hilton has named an experienced side for the Rising’s Buildcorp National Rugby Championship (NRC) clash against Queensland Country for the Horan-Little Shield at Bond University on Sunday afternoon.
Thirteen players boast Super Rugby experience with a cumulative 200 caps whilst a further five have represented their country at Test level.
“We will always put our strongest side out on the pitch and will look to play an exciting style of rugby,” said Hilton.
Flanker Scott Fuglistaller will lead the Rising with co-captain Colby Fainga’a and last year’s leading point-scorer flyhalf Jack Debreczeni, whilst Jonah Placid and Pat Leafa will reprise their crucial 2014 roles at fullback and hooker.
Hilton has also rewarded Harlequins centre Leo Taliu with a place in the starting 15 after his impressive Direct Connect Dewar Shield Premiership season with the Harlequins.
“Leo’s come off the back of a very good season with ‘Quins and thoroughly deserves his spot in the side,” said Hilton.
Taliu will make his Rising debut outside ‘Quins teammate Lloyd Johansson, with Wallaby wingers Tom English and Dom Shipperly providing support on the fringes.
In the forwards, second rower Murray Douglas debuts alongside former NSW Country Eagles prop Duncan Chubb, whilst flanker Jordy Reid joins Fainga’a and Fugistaller in a formidable back row combination, who will target Queensland Country’s dangerous halves pairing of James Tuttle and Sam Greene.
Despite his excitement at starting Rising’s 2015 campaign, Hilton isn’t taking his opposition lightly.
“Queensland Country are a strong side, particularly up front. Players like Sef Faagase and Radike Samo pose a very serious running threat, and the strength of their forwards pack allows players like Tuttle and Greene to control the game through the halves.”
Rising stalwarts Fereti Sa’aga and Pom Simona will have the opportunity to feature off the bench; as will exciting young centre Sione Tuipolotu and Direct Connect Dewar Shield Grand Final man-of-the-match fullback Justin Marsters.
The side features players from all nine Dewar Shield clubs, including eleven players from last weekend’s Grand Final between Harlequin and Melbourne University.
