Or potentially Schmidt playing 4D chess and shielding the worthy Captains from being labelled as the bloke who led the Wallabies to 0-3 flogging by the Lions.

Or potentially giving into NSW pressure. He was probably picking Gordan to start anyways. I reckon either McReight or Wilson have better rugby brains though.

Potentially means he is considering starting Gleeson and/or Tizzano. AAA would be a better choice and has a guaranteed starting spot but personally I would go with McReight as a long term call

McReight seems the natural decision based off how he understands the game. I would only worry about his workload playing at 7. Halfbacks, Hookers and THPs also have a lot on their plate. But it's been done before. At some point we should be picking a bloke who's got 20+ caps and is gonna be around for at least the next 5 years.

I'm not convinced he's a leader though - seems to be great at getting through his own work, but not sure he's the guy to be motivating the team, upholding standards or communicating with referees effectively. I don't really see any obvious leadership traits beyond him just being really really good at rugby.

Yeah, I don't know about that. You lead through actions. He's everywhere and does everything! He was also the captain at the Junior World Cup and he nearly got them over the line. I doubt he would have gone backwards with leadership. On the communication side with the ref he managed to eventually get Williams to see a penalty to the Reds in the 2nd half. I think he'll be fine, refs respect him, I back him to communicate well with them. I'm really only judging what I see in interviews, and he always gives very honest and insightful commentary imo.

Back then, journalists and fans were left gobsmacked when Horwill was revealed as the new captain, replacing Rocky Elsom, only when Robbie Deans’ Wallabies squad was paraded individually out of a plane at the Qantas hangar in Sydney.

Uhhhh did Doran not watch rugby in 2011?

Even with the copious amounts of rum I drank that night, I still remember watching Horwill lift the Tri-Nations cup in Brisbane as the Captain.......

Wasn't really a shock a month later to see Horwill lead the Wallabies to the RWC.

The RWC squad was announced prior to the final Tri-Nations game…

At this point I’m pretty convinced McReight isn’t really a captain type considering he’s been overlooked by a lot of coaches at both Super and Test level.

And Wilson’s spot might not be too certain with the need for a jumping 6 to ply with Skelton. I’m happy with Gordon, he’s the best 9 we have currently and Schmidt seems to trust him which matters
