Just saw this article on BBC.

Great servant to English international rugby and world rugby. Done so much for the English international game, great respect for the man, apart from that drop goal....

To avoid any misunderstandings, he is retiring from international rugby, but is still playing for Toulon in France

Spray Tan salons all over the world are crying out in shame. Guess they still have Flood to keep them in business.

Sorry guys, love to hate Wilko.

I don't reckon his tan is fake. He lives in a relatively sunny place.

As much as i hate seeing England lose, i always like to see Wilkinson do well. I hate him for what he did in 03 but damn he was good for England.

Maybe a typo there EFTT67?

Goodbye Johnnie, anyone who can claim to be a world cup winner has a special place in rugby history. My favourite memory of Wilinson is the 1998 Aus V England game in Brisbane with the XXXX push up promotion behind the try lines.

He retired from international duty at the right time. Never really replicated his previous form in his 2nd stint with the English national team and it's questionable if he'd make the match day 22 for the 6Ns. Best to focus on club rugby now especially since he's gone an impressive amount of time (for him) without a serious injury.

He was a great foe of us Australians and a great player and a genuinely nice guy... pity about how things are going now *cough* Ashton *cough*

I will always think of him as an amazing player that was really misused at international level (at least in my eyes).

Remember how great he was in that one game against Australia in England where they played 3 wingers against Australia so Johnny played FB on defense? He was smashing.

Everyone is saying he wasn't good enough. Your flyhalf needs a good pack in front of them. England proved that in 2003 and made his job as easy as possible. England have been terrible in defence and outside of their scrum the forwards have been below par. Such a shame and Wilkinson and Flood for that matter have been made the victims.

I feel as Australians whilst do admire good players who constantly 'have a go' and have a good work ethic. You know those pom's that have been lauded as 'should have been Aussie' the likes of Botham, Darren Gough, Alec Stewart etc...

Amaizingly dedicated player. Not every fans cup of tea but I think all would admire his work ethic. What he has acheived in an injury plagued career is amaizing and it would be scary to think of the point scoring tally he would of racked up if not restricted by the lengthy injury delays he has suffered.

He will certainly hold his place in the history of English Rugby.

I reckon he was OK but not as great as lauded. To some degree I judge my fly halfs by how well they perform when their pack goes backwards. Can they step up ? I don't reckon Jonny would have and you're right he had an armchair ride courtesy a great forward pack for many years. I rate Morne Steyn the same - a good fly half, not great - who could kick. Just not my type of player I'm afraid, I prefer tries.

Pfft there isn't a fly half in the world who can win a game with their pack being beaten up. Period.

Did you see Wilkinson when he played his first international against Australia - what was he, 18, maybe 19? They got beaten 76-0 and he was a stand-out. Took a lot of guts to keep going in a game like that, it could have broken the spirit of a lot of good young players.

Yeah, much harder back then when you didn't have twitter fans to back you up and appreciate photos of your haircut...

Cheers Wilko. As much as I admired your work ethic and ability, for me the true measure of you as an opponent was that any time the Poms fronted up to the Wallabies and your name was in the playing list, I never felt good about about it. And I just couldn't hate you either, which annoyed me to no end.

That is about as high quality praise for any opposition player I can think of.

One of the greats, no doubt about it, and you carried that England team for years. They would never have achieved many of the things they achieved without you. Glad you left on your terms. You earned that right.
