What does the Green and Gold Rugby community think about this decision and the timing of it?
I personally think that its the right decision although the timing could have been better. Either make the decision should have been made to change captain at the start of the international season, not half-way through. Or stick with Rocky and change after the world cup.

I agree that Horwill will be a better captain than Elsom. Perhaps it could have been done at the start of the season, although it wasn't a bad idea to give him one last chance.

However, I can't really understand all the flak Deans cops retrospectively for appointing Elsom in the first place. If you look at the current starting 15, none of those who are 'leaders' - pockock, genia, horwill - were near being ready to Captain the Wallabies. Most of those guys were still in single digits for test caps.

Also, you to admit it was damn tempting to pick Elsom with the form he was in when he came back from Europe.

Sharpe was really the only contender to Elsom at the time. It was one or the other. I don't see Moore as captain material.

As for the timing, it would have been extremely risky for Deans to pick Horwill as captain when he hadn't played for the wallabies for 18 months. He gave Elsom a chance to keep going, and Horwill a chance to impress, and this is the result we have.

I think the timing of the decision is great, it has now refocussed the rugby community on what is required in the next couple of months. (we should not need reminding anyway!)

It is time to let the disaster against Samoa behind us, the losses under Rocky are now history and we can all get behind a Super 15 Rugby captain who will take us to victory.

It is a line in the sand and our dominance starts now

hmmmm... wait till rocky's book comes out entitled "Leader of the Wallabies" and then sack him from being captain the next week. It's just too cruel.

But 1000% the right decision.

I would have preferred that it was done earlier but he is the man for the job at the moment.

Had Elsom been playing all year we may have not been having this discussion.

Apart from the obvious improvement that Horwill is now captain, now Elsom has to earn his spot in the squad along with all the other players. This could see him improve greatly as he is now no longer a certain spot in the squad and has to prove his point.

A very good decision, made when it had to be made. Horwill will be a great Wallaby captain, up there with Gregan and Eales.

After watching the impact Horwill had as captain for the Reds this year, it's pretty clear this is a massive plus to our side. With Horwill as captain our chances of winning the world cup have improved significantly since last week.

The timing of it I thought worked very well for a few reasons.

I think the naming of the squad is the logical time to name the captain. Not during the world cup, not 2 years before the cup, not at the start of the test season but right now. At the same time as we decide which players are best for our squad, we should then look at the squad and decide the best person to lead the team based on the information available to the team (i.e. who have been our strongest players so far this year, who has shown leadership capabilities in the past, and is there a reason to get rid of the current captain. Horwill has been our best forward this year (I have been saying since the late rounds of the Super 15 that he would walk right into a world 15 on current form) He's shown be an amzing leader to the Reds this year, and is currently the most successful Aus captain at provincial rugby level for the last 8 years, and he embodies the success and spirit of the Reds (something that the people of Australia truly believe in!). Elsom did a solid job as captain, but he was always an interim captain in my eyes. He took the job when we clearly needed someone to lead from the front and show people that Aus had world class forwards and he was our best forward for a period. But for a world cup we need more than just an inspirational player, we need an inspirational leader.

In the end it has worked out quite well starting the season with Rocky as Captain. It really allowed Deans to continue to name Elsom in the side. If Rocky wasnt captain he would not have been in the starting side, which means he still wouldn't be match fit or in any form, which means he would be useless to us. As it is he was thrown in the deep end and now after 4 games we are seeing the benefits of that with last weeks game demonstrating that he is getting back to near best. Also If Horwill had captained at the start of the season he would probably have a few loses under his belt and the momentum and excitement behind his naming would be a distant memory.

Finally I think Elsom may now shine more than ever. He knows he's under a lot of pressure to keep his spot and has the burden of the captaincy off his shoulders, a burden that he never seemed quite comfortable with.

Another reason may be for the timing may be to let Horwill's first game as captain be at Suncorp Stadium a ground he is accoustamed to being captain at.

Better to have done it at the beginning of the international season. However, as most of the Reds players were rested for the Samoa test, this wasn't possible. It works out OK anyway as Big Kev can make his Wallabies captaincy debut at his home ground in front of a full house.

Now Rocky can focus on getting back to his rampaging best as he didn't look to be fully comfortable with the (c) next to his name.

Is everyone convinced Gregan was a great captain? Unlike Eales he was unable to deal with the 2 most important refs of his era - Kaplan and Watson and he had some difficulties with Paddy O'Brien. Perhaps Farr-Jones, despite his subsequent self obsession, would have been a more appropriate comparison.

Thank goodness is all I can say. Now our chances of lifting the cup have risen from 1% to about 10%.
With committment, discipline, and focus the referees can be taken out of the equation.
Go the Wallabies!

A couple of days before Rock got sacked Cooper was on the tv saying that everyone in the team was right behind him. In Canberra this normally indicates internal problems.
Kev is a really positive guy, it is infectious. Last year when he was injured I saw him sitting on the sideline every game really supporting the guys, he did so much promotion in the community. For a guy that could not play he was still a major positive force in the team.

Without having seen a lot of him I think Horwill is the real deal - the issue is the timing and why they didn't just make Genia captain from Game 1 this year until Horwill was ready...they could have swapped it around to see how others went if they weren't committed to Elsom and wanted to see Horwill making it back to test rugby. Makes you wonder how much the Suncorp test is figuring in their plans - which would be a difficult balance to get right I accept.

I don't think the timing is a major issue there, Horwill was already a quasi-leader, it was said somewhere in this thread he was talking to the team in a huddle in a test whilst Rocky was sucking it in...so the transition would be fairly seamless.

The timing is good as it would really invigorate the whole of the Wallabies squad in the lead up to RWC, methinks...
