SANZAR TO EXTEND HALF-TIME BREAKS DURING TRI-NATIONS

SANZAR is to extend the half-time break during the 2011 Tri-Nations from 10 to 12 minutes.

The change has been made to assist the All Blacks, Springboks and Wallabies in adjusting to a longer half-time break during the forthcoming Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

The International Rugby Board (IRB) confirmed on Friday that the half-time length at the tournament, starting on 9 September, would be increased to 12 minutes.

SANZAR CEO, Greg Peters, said the Tri-Nations presented a perfect opportunity to assist players and managements in adjusting to the change.

"During Super Rugby we have had 10 minute breaks and it therefore made sense for us to trial the new format during the Tri-Nations. The idea has been well received and supported by our partner Unions whose respective teams will put the finishing touches to their Rugby World Cup planning during this year's Tri-Nations," Peters said.

The 2011 Tri-Nations kicks off of 23 July when Australia hosts South Africa in Sydney.

Issued by SANZAR.

Good that they are giving them practice, but can't understand the need for change. Just more Advertising $'s?

Ceratinly sounds like more dollars but I'd be interested if anyone actually keeps time during the break and how strict they are at it. What repercussions are there if a team is out a minute or two late?

Mungo half times are a joke - they usually take about 20 mins

while we're on the sanzar topic , Can someone ask sanzar to decrease the goal post width by two metre , that way it'll be harder to get easy 3 points from penalties/drop goals , this will surely make teams go for the try rather then then opting to kick for points , make for entertaining rugby . having a smaller width goal post will effect the game POSITIVELY in so many ways , i just cant point them out right now , Maybe someone else can . Goal kickers will be scratching their heads right about now , hoping sanzar will never do such a thing.

Gladiator - you probably missed this debate when it ran in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. The problem with discouraging penalty goals is that it's a green light to players to break the law in the red zone. I reckon there's already too many professional fouls in the effort to stop the try. Teams are happy to take their chances with the 3-points rather than give away 7.

Anyway - 10 minutes was always plenty of time to have a piss and grab another coldie, but it often put unnecessary pressure on the guy ordering pizzas. I welcome the decision, and I'll have anchovies on mine, thanks.

Just on the penalty goal debate, I agree some infringements require a potential 3 points but some penalties don't deserve 3 points either. Being slightly off-side is hardly a 3 point offence.

Maybe they are thinking of the fans at the ground and allowing them more time for the beer run.

Off-side is definately 3 points. Considering how much it is penalised, if you reduced the penalty the teams would never bother to get on side.

Maybe 15 mins but not 20mins. There clearly doing it for the money though, which leaves a bad taste. I think 20mins is way to long and will ruin any flow and tension. By the time it comes back on I will have forgotten whats going on.
