Tempted though I was to put this in the tahs and wallabies positivity threads I thought it justified its own:
After 20-odd years (with the emphasis on odd) of taking the mickey, it's time for the farewell Ruck and Maul column. And many thanks to long-time confidant Helmut Wasching, who is leading a Wallabies supporters group through Argentina, for how to finish it all off in style. As Helmut explained over a Quilmes Cerveza on the Santa Fe Boulevard in Rosario: ''You've given misguided rugby administrators enough curry over the years; it's time to celebrate the real heart and soul men of the game

some terrible sub-editing on the photo montage he has selected there (not blaming GG).

Single-handedly did more damage to the game than any other person in my lifetime, with his relentless negativity and mindless reporting.

Compare Paul Cully's work in today's SMH with anything of Growfat's. Cully writes an informative, learned, and intelligent column. Growfat is just a lazy, ignorant, self-opinionated gossip mongerer. Good riddance to bad rubbish, as my old Gran used to say.

In stark contrast to the positivity coming from your posts wamberal.....

As for GG, I switched off reading him regularly about 10 years ago, lately it's once in a blue moon. I think the overwhelming feeling that started to come through in his articles was a level of discouragement that he could never get the dual level of coverage that so many of the AFL and NRL print journos get. IMO he overplayed what in the grand scheme of things were relative minor issues - eg his relentless articles / criticism about the scrum.

Maybe with the extra time GG might frequent G&GR and spill the beans on the "real" stories without fear, unless he's already on here?

Courage? Real stories?

He doesn't appear to know a great deal about the sport. I know he's more a beat reporter than a columnist, but does rugby really need beat reporters? Whenever Growden slips into analyst mode he loses the plot entirely.

Cully's a better fit because he doesn't write exclusively about boring locker-room gossip and "insider" secrets. Who really gives a shit about that stuff anyway? Can people not wait until Saturday to see who is picked?

Talk about operant conditioning, just when you get used to his negative political articles, he writes a nice piece.

Can someone who has a SMH account log in leave a comment that reflects his negativity and shitness. Reading the current comments the sentiments seem to be that he has contributed in a good way and is actually insightful

As far as I know, my posts are not published in an allegedly serious newspaper.

There is nothing wrong with criticism, provided that it is constructive, and balanced. Growfat's work is neither. My posts, some of which incidentally are positive, are in fact balanced by some opposing views, which is as it should be.

I heard something rather profound the other day - Constructive criticism, at the end of the day it's still just criticism.

What is constructive about calling him fat and the hyperbole about him being the most destructive influence on the game? How did you measure that anyway?

Sad day, if you like him or not rugby coverage just got less diverse and a shitload less colorful.

Growden knows a lot about the game, he writes a shits and giggles column. The attacks on him are hilarious. He is perhaps the greatest troll in rugby media history.

Get him on the podcast, a weekly "radio" segment is needed stat.

WJ I have had dinner with him and his lovely wife a few times. What you described is pretty spot on. He enjoys taking the piss out of the old boys network in Sydney and how highly they rate themselves, yet how incompetent they are - These titans of industry. I guess a lot of people who take him seriously while getting hot under the collar over him probably don't like what they see because it reflects a bit of who they are and what they stand for.

AFAIK you don't usually need an account to make a comment.

R and M is a shits n giggles column, but he's also been tasked with being the herald "chief rugby correspondant", in which capacity he might have shown some of this rugby nous you claim he possesses. I have never seen him do anything more than summarise events. Certainly nothing bordering on "analysis", as I understand the meaning of the term.
