G'day,

With the arrival of the international season, it seems to appropriate for us to develop an anthem or song for Green and Gold Rugby. We are very lucky to have among our membership an opera baritone who is willing to have a crack at recording it.

What we'd like you to do is have a think about the words. Ideas, phrases, poetry, whatever you've got, we'd like to hear it. No guarantees it'll end up in the final song, but we promise that all ideas will be considered.

I imagine it to be somewhere between a rugby song and a rugby anthem. So, something to sing at the annual gathering at the pub, but also something to present us to the world, a la The World in Union.

Stick ideas below.

Cheers

I'll have a shot...

Queensland Reds let us rejoice
For Quade is young and free*
With quick ruck ball and Braid for toil
They're girt by mediocrity

When Van exclaims with all his voice
On Sunday c*nts will roll
The Force beware there's passion there
Advance Bandwagon Fair

With fat rare steaks in finals week
Advance Bandwagon Fair

* pending the outcome of his trial

It's one thing to sing a rugby song, it's another thing altogether to make one up. Millennia from now, young Oceanasians will be singing this song.

P.S. Reddy, I like it.

In my head it starts something like:

Green and gold
The men of green and gold
Proud and bold
The men of green and gold
They something something
Something thing
Somthing something thing.

I'll record myself singing this if it helps.

Make sure you record the something something bit too, that bit is vital for your song to make sense.

We are the mighty Waratahs
Rough and tumble rugby stars
We play the game as it should be played

Famous when we run the ball
We can scrum and ruck and maul
Playing the game as it should be played

Waratahs, Waratahs
We play the game as it should be played
Famous when we run the ball
We can scrum and ruck and maul
Playing the game as it should be played

We are the mighty men in blue
We will take the game to you
We play the game as it should be played

We’ve got talent
We’ve got heart
We will tear your team apart
Playing the game as it should be played

Waratahs, Waratahs
We play the game as it should be played
We’ve got talent
We’ve got heart
We will tear your team apart
Playing the game as it should be played

Sounds like a good excuse to remind everyone just how good a home written, produced and recorded rugby anthem can be. Take it away guys - no please, take it away.

Watched the opening ceremony for 1993 world cup yesterday (am converting my videos to DVD) and that anthem gave me goosebumps.

Would like something similar please.

It would be great to produce something that could make an appearance at Wallaby matches. We've never really had anything like "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" or "Cwm Rhondda", but I'd love it if we did. Even if the G&GR song doesn't reach those heights, maybe it will start a new trend in singing at the match (anyone who has been to England or Wales home matches will know how awesome a great rugby supporters' song can be).

Green and Gold, Green and Gold
Green and Gold Forever

...relates to the wallabies and the website.

Come on everyone!
