2 schoolboys have been selected for the Gold Coast Team taking on the international teams at next weekends tournament. One from TSS (16) and the other from Palm Beach Currumbin (17)- both fliers. The TSS lad was the leading try scorer from the recent Byron Bay 7's where he scored 7 tries in effectively 2 full games.

Took a drive down the highway today to watch a few games. Bloody hot day and not enough shade, but some exciting stuff on display. Plenty of Pacific flavour.

The Aussie Spirit, which I believe is the Aussie Sevens team got a fair old shock in pool play and were nearly upset by a Sunnybank side. They really are going to have to improve if they want to make an impression in the World 7's series. The Qld Barbarian side which has the likes of Higginbottom, Luafutu and Lucas may well be the team to beat tomorrow, along with a Fijian side (name escapes me).

Nah, if he's crook they wouldn't play him. You gotta be fit and well to play 7s.

Lindommer; that's just painful!

I don't really rate O'Connor as a sevens coach. The Aussie 7s side has really struggled against teams they should beat for the last few years and done nothing of note, even when they get access to stronger, better players. The list of minnows we've lost to is appalling. Of course, having real, pro 7s players that are decently paid would help.

Nah the player Crook I'm not sure of his first name. Maybe Liam Crook?

Was the TSS fella Crook?

Yes, Lindsay Crook and he was well.
Scored a couple, set up many more and certainly didn't lookout of place in the company of redgums masquerading as Fijian players. You wouldn't have thought he was 16 (sorry 17 now just apparently) by his play. Put the Gold Coast side into some good scoring positions by his not too shabby speed, read the play well and is a very good attacking player with ball in hand or on the toe, defended as if he was a senior player. (See pic in 2010 GPS topic)

The South Sea Drifters are the Fijian side and looked very sharp, they just do the little off handed things so well. Should be the team to beat along with the Qld BaaBaas who I guess by the players are Academy chappies. It is interesting to see Nicky Price in the program for the Baa Baas, interesting in that I am sure the program print time would be more probably in the time of a week yet we only heard on Wednesday that he had been cut from th AFL and now seeked forgiveness and readmission to the ranks of rugby.

I see the 200cm Rob Simmons is playing for the QLD team, and scoring tries!

The big Simmo had a field day - think scored a few - big bugger has a bit of speed and actually saw him sidestep (close enough anyway).

Good crowd - probably bigger today - seemed that tickets priced well and no complaints there - plenty to eat and drink with the top tickets.

There was a "beer trailer" at the ground - reportedly cost $2,000,000 and rents for $50,000.00 per day (no costs to Breakers) - damm thing is unbelieveable but every bloke needs one of those at home :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Rob Simmons really looks like he has grown physically since last year, he actually carries the physique of a S14 player and not a teenager these days

Simmons is massive! Look forward to seeing him step up in 2010. The other player to catch the eye yesterday was Jonno Lance. Very cool, strong and reads play well. He will be a good inside back support option for the Reds in 2010.

Rod Davis looks like he has bulked up, but in one run showed the pace is still there. Speaking of pace, Higginbottom showed a great deal of it when he ran down a back in the Barbarians game against the Aussie legends.

For a big boy Simmo ran and played very well, Jonno Lance was very cool. The BaaBaa team played well and it was disappointing they bombed out early.
The main Aussie team looked rather ill prepared and lost their semi - they need a lot more work to be anywhere competitive in the IRB 7's - actaully they were awful when looking at that standard.
In the end the two fun Fijian sides held court and a great final was had, Uprising Beach Resort 7 losing to South Sea Drifters 17.

yes must say Crook did well considering his age also noticed another young fella playing for Sunnybank Cayden Matehaere did really well and has beefed it up great tackling and skills and also noticed the whole Sunnybank team pretty young shame Lucas didn't get to play with them...did well against Aussie Spirit team too

Well, I thought it was funny.

A few people up there are talking about Jonno Lance (son of Dean) and I'd love to see him play in a senior game and measure him with the LeeGrantometer. I haven't seen him since he played 12 for Qld II Schools in 2007. He didn't take my eye but that means exactly zilch at that age. Looking good playing 10 in 1st Grade?

Rob Simmons was huge even as a 17 year old but this year is a watershed for him. It's the year he has to show us he has the physicality and workrate to go with the bulk. If he wants to go walking around the park from lineout to restart to lineout, he may as well go and try his luck with the Poms.

Too harsh at his age when he is still only 20? Yeah, definitely: shut up LG. Is he showing physicality on the park in first grade?

Also, how is Aidan Toua going? I thought he was a likely Super14 player when he was at school but I understood that he had a long injury in 2008. He played some Sevens earlier this year IIRR, but how did he go in 1st Grade??
