McKenzie finds right-hand man for Reds

New Queensland coach Ewen McKenzie has found his right-hand man with the unheralded Jim McKay to guide the Reds exciting backline in next year's Super 14.

McKay, a former Sydney clubmate of McKenzie's at Randwick, will end a 14-year coaching stint in the United Kingdom to join the former Waratahs coach at Ballymore.

Described by former Wallabies mentor Bob Dwyer as a genuine hands-on coach and humble character, the 42-year-old former winger is currently in charge of the Leicester Academy.

Before that the Reds new backs and defence coach led the Cornish Pirates and worked at Rotherham.

McKenzie, appointed as head coach 10 days ago ahead of John Connolly, told his new players about McKay at the Reds induction day at Ballymore on Monday.

In a new structure, Queensland will also have three consultant coaches in former Wallabies Tim Horan, Alec Evans and Pat Howard.

McKenzie, to take charge of the Reds forwards, will tap into the vast knowledge of "scrum doctor" Evans, whose coaching contribution to Queensland rugby dates back more than four decades.

McKay inherits a backline which includes Wallabies Will Genia, Quade Cooper, Digby Ioane, Peter Hynes and Richard Kingi.

Melbourne Storm three-quarter Will Chambers is expected to immediately vie for a starting place but has been given extra time to overcome a taxing NRL season before starting training next month.

so just to recap on the Reds off-season

Firstly the forwards coach and the team manager were sacked because of team disgruntlement, so the QRU hired 3 former players in Daniel Herbert, Tim Horan and Dan Crowley, but they still lost 2 of there international players in Berrick Barnes and Hugh McMenimen, which also triggered the chairman and chief executive to quit. NRL recruit Will Chambers unsucessfully tried to renege on his contract because he tought he would be playing with Berrick. A new Chairman was hired in Rupert McCall and he sacked the previous coach in Phil Mooney, Ewen McKenzie the former NSW Waratahs coach was hired because the preffered coach former QLD Reds player Michael Foley is still under contract at the NSW Waratahs. Rupert McCall and the QRU pulled off a cross-code coup by signing AFL corporate Jim Carmichael. Ewen McKenzie has now appointed Jim McKay form the England as his Backs coach whilst also bringing in scrum doctor Alec Evans and former wallaby backs Pat Howard and Tim Horan as assistant coaches.

Well I'm excited by this. Dunno why. Perhaps because its just finally finalised.

As long as Link stands up and IS THE COACH. McKay, Evans, Howard and Horan can play their role but Link is the man the players focus on.

Open training as in trials? I reckon I am better than Jack Kennedy at least. Possibly Leroy as well. If I can pull off a tackle or two and work on my throwing then Saia Fainga'a can watch out too.
