Reds' Digby Ioane out for six months after shoulder reconstruction

May 14, 2009

Destructive Wallabies winger Digby Ioane's 2009 season is over after being booked in for a shoulder reconstruction.

Ioane, who would have commanded a starting spot in Australia's backline for the domestic Test season due to his brilliant Super 14 form for Queensland, will be sidelined for up to six months.

The 23-year-old three-quarter initially injured his left shoulder in the Reds' 31-24 loss to the Lions on April 18 but played on before aggravating it against the Brumbies a fortnight ago.

Reds coach Phil Mooney said the decision to have an operation was made after a specialist examined Ioane on Wednesday and made in consultation with Test coach Robbie Deans.

"It's a real blow for Digby, who I'm sure would have walked into the Wallaby side this year on the back of his exceptional performances for the Reds at outside centre," said Mooney.

"The news also came as a shock to Digby. He's never faced such a long period on the sidelines before so he's getting his head around that reality.

"When I spoke to Robbie Deans about it, we agreed it would give Digby time to really get himself into the best possible shape to attack the 2010 season."

Deans had said Ioane would be one of the "first names registered" when Australia's selectors sat down to pick their 30-man Test squad later this month.

Australia's form Super 14 back is now also at long odds to be available for the Wallabies' end-of-year tour of the United Kingdom.

Tragic for him and the Wobblies. Each major op takes a little bit out of you.

Looks like Stirling the Semi-Conscious Warrior lives to fight another campaign.

Ring Ring...Ring Ring...Ring Ri

Phil: Hello.

Robbie: Phil? Its Robbie here. Any word about Digby's injury?

Phil: Just got the doctor's report Robbie. Not as bad as first thought. Probably out for a month, maybe 6 weeks max. Just about to let Digby know.

Robbie: So he doesn't know yet?

Phil: No, I'm meeting with him in about 15 minutes to give him the results. He'll be happy - still able to play for the Wallabies.

Robbie: Hmmmm...or perhaps....not?

Phil: What do you mean Robbie?

Robbie: Well you want him back at the Reds next year right?

Phil: Absolutely, but there's not a pigs chance in Mexico of him staying. We can't afford him.

Robbie: No, you're right. But no one in Japan or the UK of France or wherver wants to sign someone who is still recovering from a serious injury. Someone who hasn't played any footy for, let's say, about -6-8 months. Right?

Phil: Probably not, but Diggers is only out for a few weeks.

Robbie: Unless.....

Phil: Unless we tell him its more serious than we thought. That he needs a complete shoulder reconstruction and he won't be right to even start training until November/December when...

Robbie: ...when all those clubs clamouring for his signature now have already started their season and have filled their player books.

Phil: Robbie, you sly kiwi prick. Nice. Well, I guess I better go. Digby will be here any minute so I better get ready to give him the sad news and reassure him that the QRU...

Robbie: ..and the ARU...

Phil: .. and the ARU, yes right, will stand by him and ensure he gets all the treatment he needs ready for the next Super 14 season.

Robbie: Well done Phil.

Phil: Nice work Robbie.
