I thought the Rebels would be first in line for him. :'(

He deserves a chance to start and develop his career.

It is strange though, the Brumbies have a great THP (Alexander is a better scrummager THP than LHP) and decent back up in Maafu.

They need a decent LHP badly.

The Brumbies are hoarding 5/8s and Tightheads. Shame on them.

Palmer would be a good man to have at Rebels but the article did say Weekes is expected to come to Rebles, which is nearly as good.

sorry to go off topic but does anyone else think it's odd/stupid that rebs will offer mortlock a 3 year deal?

i think the rebels deal included a coaching deal if he couldnt play anymore, its more about having mortlock down there as a leader i think.

Another Hickey masterstroke. Having re-signed all the crock backs he's now starting to dismantle the pack. Well done.

Palmer Re-signs With Waratahs Until 2011

Illawarra Mercury

Saturday June 7, 2008

By TIM KEEBLE

FORMER Illawarra junior representative Dan Palmer has re-signed with the NSW Waratahs for three years.

Palmer, who grew up at Barrack Heights, debuted with the Waratahs off the bench in this season's Super 14 win over the Highlanders.

The Southern Districts prop was also part of the Waratahs squad for their round-13 game against the Stormers in Cape Town, South Africa, in May.

"Finding 19-year-old props who can handle Super 14 football is a rarity and we're sure over the next three years Dan will develop into one of the premier props in Australian rugby," NSWRU chief executive officer Jim Lestrange said after the contract signing.

Palmer is in Wales with the Australian under 20 side for the junior world championships and has been named in the starting XV for their opening match against Canada.

The son of former Vikings and NSW enforcer Peter Palmer, he followed the traditional pathway through to senior representative football, earning selection in the Australian Schools A side in 2005 and the Australian Schools team in 2006.

He then progressed to the national under 19 team, playing in last year's under 19 world championships.

Palmer will be part of a strong front-row rotation with the Waratahs and can count on receiving plenty of guidance from fellow props Matt Dunning, Benn Robinson and Al Baxter.

Don't see the Tahs being very willing to let someone of his calibre go, unless Palmer has an option in his favour somewhere - which is very possible. Tahs were always very very likely to lose one of their 4 top props, but losing Palmer instead of Kepu or Baxter would be a real surprise and perhaps a retention failure - unless they know something we don't.

Reds will not be happy at the prospect of losing Weeks to Melbourne. Someone like the Reds would surely lose an up and comer like Slipper than a starting player with 2 years experience like Weeks - the Reds are pretty light on for experience.

Rate this bloke. A lot. He was plug and play last year when Baxter went down like a sack of shit and for once didn't get up :fishing

Baxter to Melbourne?

Palmer has to get starts.

Regardless of his connection to Melbourne, the Reds would have to take it as a pretty big slap in the face if he were to ditch them considering they gave him his opportunity and gave him the assurance that they would build there scrum around him. It would be interesting if there are any truth in the rumours because he is very popular with the players up here.

Fuck it! Think about a post-Baxter world Tahs! Kepu started out alright at THP tonight but started to get a bit uppish ...

After a great night this is an absolute disaster. Baxter has probably this season left and then retirement/overseas. Kepu is a LHP and Palmer is the next Wallaby tight head. Why oh why would you let him go? He is probably the most important person to keep outside the current 22 and in the top 5 must-have retentions in the squad.

On other threads I've said he should be in the 15 this week and next to get him more exposure at top level, but no, Mr Conservative has to take the safe way and Palmer goes south. I always thought it might be to the Rebels, but the Brumbies? In three years time we will bitterly regret this stupidity.

It is a bigger loss for QLD if Weekes goes to the Rebels, than Palmer going to the Brumbies for NSW. I really hope that it just a bad rumour.

The Reds can afford to lose Kingi with Genia, Lucas in the squad, but having depth in the front row is such a valuable asset

The people the Tahs most need to have on the roster in two/three years time are:

Robinson
Palmer
TPN
Douglas
Mowen
McCaffery (Palu is off to make his fortune allegedly)
Beale
Fitzpatrick
Horne
Turner
Nadolo or Betham

The list is in descending order of priority

The people who the Tahs want to get when they come off contract are: Pocock, Kimlin, JOC (James O'Connor), Genia. Recruit the balance from the current squad, less the retirements that are inevitable (Baxter, Waugh, Caldwell).

So already from the priority list we look to have lost Palmer and Betham. And we are keeping some turkeys (sorry Bruce, but he's the last attacking back you want on your roster, even though he can defend). So right now I reckon the retention manager is doing a worse job than Hickey! (And last night doesn't change Hickey's huge coaching shortcomings, but that's a topic for another thread).
