CMC Investigation into QRU over, no charges to be laid

No one will face charges over a sports rorts scandal that has been in the Crime and Misconduct Commission's crosshairs for nearly two years.

The CMC today confirmed no charges would be pursued against Simon Tutt, the former state government ministerial adviser accused of orchestrating the transfer of $200,000 to a rugby academy linked to him.

A final report on the long-running investigation also made clear charges should not be laid against the Queensland Rugby Union or its former chief executive, Kenneth Freer.

Some people might not have realised the full implications of this investigation, firstly if found guilty in any way, the QRU would have been tarnished with a brush of 'no more grants' from the QLD Govt, even now they have been damaged with this investigation.

Additionally the major reason the QRU has yet to sign a new naming rights sponsor for 2011 is due to investigation, no sponsor was willing to allign themselves with a organisation which was potentially going to be found guilty of misconduct.

This outcome is worth potentially $millions over the next 5 years..

there were a couple of issues, the fact that the grant was rushed through the approval process, and the fact that the QRU diverted some of the funds to UQ as agreed upon with Tutt... Funds for one project arent supposed to be diverted for use on another project even though it was the sports minister who agreed upon it.

Tutty played for UQ back in the day, so when it came to signing off on the grant, it was 'alleged' he wanted to make sure his old club was looked after. Evidently there was no proof of any wrongdoing on his part.
