Yes, but after wanting a better deal from the Tahs (which they didn't give him). You don't need to be so defensive.

Mowen made a great call moving to Canberra and getting out of the Tahs... Rocky as Tahs captain he would have seen a lot of bench time.... Mowen had a good season last year... I'm pleased Jake White picked him as captain for this new squad...

Has there been anything the Brumbies have done which has displeased you?

no not this preseason... I think they've done well with their time, recruiting and staff recruiting... Both trials were good, so I hope they'll be there ready to get the points each week.

Thought Mowen's descision was made well before the Rocky decision was made, so would expect this was irrelevent.

Yes - and tranquility is right that it was to leave room for Elsom. But the Tahs didn't actually nail down Elsom until after Mowen left. That was reprehensible. They got lucky.

McCabe might still play against the Force...

Brumbies click into gear as McCabe gets the all-clear

By Chris Dutton

February 17, 2012

Jake White admits he faces a major back-line headache for the ACT Brumbies' season opener with Wallaby Pat McCabe on track to make his return from a shoulder injury.

McCabe missed the Brumbies' 66-0 rout over the ACT XV at Greenway Oval last night.

But White is hopeful he will be fit to play the Western Force next Friday after making a successful return to full-contract training yesterday morning.

McCabe needs to get through a full week of training before round one to be in selection contention.

The 23-year-old said it was "touch and go" whether he would be able to join his teammates for the start of a new season.

Test front-rowers Ben Alexander and Stephen Moore as well as winger Henry Speight are all expected to be available next week.

And after most of White's outside backs shone in the last trial match, the coach said McCabe's possible inclusion would create a significant selection dilemma.

"[Pat] just has to keep going with his rehab, he's nearly there and it's just a choice of whether or not mentally he's up for it," White said.

"I'm not going to push him for the sake of putting him in. If he feels good enough and feels like he cannot let himself down – I know what type of guy he is and I have to be very sensitive because he will want to play even if he's not ready. It's a wonderful dilemma to be in that one of your backs is available for selection."

With McCabe on the sideline, White's back-line began to click in the last hit-out before their Super Rugby campaign kicks off.

Robbie Coleman made a successful return from a sternum injury and staked his claim to be the first-choice fullback. The Queanbeyan junior was cleared of another fracture to his sternum last week and was back to his best immediately.

White wants to use the 21-year-old at the back to add another dimension to his attack.

And Coleman did just that in a solid 80-minute performance.

He made some slicing counter-attacking runs and was strong in cover defence when the Brumbies were under attack.

Coleman has the ability to play in a variety of positions, but he wants to make the No. 15 jersey his own.

"With the way we play, that's where I feel I fit in best," Coleman said.

"I like having the utility role, but I'm really enjoying it at fullback . . . I'd like to be able to lock down a position.

"I have some things to work on, but I'll be very excited and happy to do it if I get thrown into fullback for the season."

The Brumbies were patchy in a match they were always expected to win and they struggled to stay disciplined in their own half.

In a Super Rugby contest, they would have been behind on the scoreboard. The ACT XV put the Brumbies under pressure and showed there was good depth in the Canberra premier division.

Brumbies skipper Ben Mowen – who was officially in charge for the first time – said it would take time for the team to hit top form.

"We're getting closer, but I don't think you're ever exactly where you want to be," Mowen said. "If you think that you rest and you fall back. We'll keep pushing. I'm happy we've taken another step, but we're not going to hit our straps in the first round. We'll be developing through the whole season."

ACT BRUMBIES 66 (Anthony Hegarty, Jesse Mogg, Nic White, Scott Fardy, Matt To'omua, Cam Crawford, Peter Kimlin, penalty try, Ian Prior tries; Zack Holmes 4, Nic White 3, Matt To'omua 2 conversions; Nic White penalty) bt ACT XV 0.

I'm just glad White has found a spot in the starting XV for Coleman, who is such a talented player...

Interesting though as he and Lilo seemed to have done a switcheroo...

Hopefully McCabe will slot in at outside centre.

Smith is a solid player, but a bit of a journeyman and McCabe's defence is a necessity for this young team.

Lilo is much better at second-fly... Coleman could make a very good 15... he’s a smart footballer and is a handful as he is so illusive... So at this time I'm guessing wingers to be Speight, Tomane and Mogg? Vaea as a 7 or 8. Kimlin as a 6.

Bowside

Peter Johnson (47)
Maybe, but I think the backline would be more balanced with Crawford at 15. Liked what I saw of him in the shute shield last year. I havent seen enough of the fringe backs play to comment really. Whats Colemans kicking game like and how is he under the highball?

Excited to see Sitauti on the wing, his natural position and he should make a good fist of it.

Exactly right. We can all guess about why Moore wasn't chosen when he seemed to be the natural choice. I don't know the guy at all but from the lounge room he looks a bit confrontational - not a bad trait against opponents but maybe not at other times.

That's my guess.

God forbid we have a forward with some mongrel.

Instead let's have a pussycat seagull like Mowen lead. Bit hard to hear him when he's playing outside the wingers though.

Moore has been deadset robbed. The continued disrespect for our greatest rugby player must be eating away at him. I fear our idiotic coaches and selectors are undermining his passion and confidence.

So how does Moore getting overlooked equate to disrespect for Cliffy Palu, naza? I'm struggling here

Love the rant but I dare say Mowen got the job because White doesn't want the disruption when Moore is called away for Wallaby duty. If that's his thinking, it makes perfect sense.

The Naza rant is utter troublemaking he's is Tahs supporter... Hosnetly the Tahs will struggle to field a quality team round 1 and for many weeks after that, the Tahs could be down 3 zip before long.

Mowen is a massive loose to the Tahs... Rocky is made of paper these days and plays along a handful of games each year... which are usually Wallabies games... White wants a long-term captain and Moore will likely move on after the Lions tour in 2013... White is looking for a stable option for the long-term which is an advantage for the team...
