Six uncapped players in Bok training squad
Tuesday, May 19 Print | Send Submit The National selectors have confirmed the South African training squad that will face a Namibian Invitation XV in Windhoek on Friday 29 May.

The 23-strong group includes 17 capped Springboks and 6 uncapped players. The uncapped players are Sharks flank Jean Deysel, Sharks lock Steven Sykes, Cheetahs prop Wian du Preez, Western Province centre Morgan Newman, Lions scrumhalf Jano Vermaak and Lions flyhalf Earl Rose.

Rose was in the Springbok squad at the end of last year but did not feature in the Tests, whilst du Preez toured England and Wales at the end of 2007 but did not play. Vermaak was in the 2007 Emerging SA squad at the IRB Nations Cup, whilst Newman featured for the Emerging side in 2007 and 2008.

Players not considered due to injury are Sharks flyhalf Ruan Pienaar and prop Deon Carstens. Lions centre Jaque Fourie was not considered as he is getting married on Saturday 30 May.

The Bulls players could not be considered due to their involvement in the Super 14 playoffs.

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers said he was disappointed about Pienaar?s injury but that it was important for the player to focus on his recovery in advance of the British & Irish Lions tour.

?Ruan is expected to be out for about three weeks and we will closely monitor his progress,? said de Villiers. ?I am hoping that he will be fit to play in the first Test against the Lions in Durban but we are fortunate in that we have adequate cover in the flyhalf position if it is required?.

De Villiers said that despite the absence of the Bulls players he was still able to assemble a strong squad. He added that the game against the Namibian XV would allow him to test systems and plays in preparation for the Lions Test series.

?Without the opportunity of a few warm-up games we must ensure that we get the most out of this match, regardless of the fact that some players are not in attendance. After this match we will assemble a Springbok squad that will have three weeks to prepare for the first Lions test and we have to maximise the time we have at our disposal,? de Villiers said.

The SA Training Squad will assemble in Pretoria on Monday 25 May and travel to Windhoek on Thursday 28 May.

The Springbok squad for the Lions series will be named on Monday 1 June.

SA Training Squad: Andries Bekker, Heinrich Br?ssow, Schalk Burger, Jean de Villiers, Jean Deysel, Bismarck Du Plessis, Wian Du Preez, Peter Grant, Adi Jacobs, Ricky Januarie, Ryan Kankowski, Tendai Mtawarira, Johan Muller, Odwa Ndungane, Morgan Newman, Jongi Nokwe, JP Pietersen, Earl Rose, John Smit (capt), Juan Smith, Adriaan Strauss, Steven Sykes, Jano Vermaak.

No Kockott?

So PDV really is crazy...
Welcome Boet, see you are a newbie. I'll exchange Cocky for Januarie but Janno Vermaak has been my Saffer S14 Best improved Player of 2009. Cocky is kak playing behind a back paddle pack and kakker in rain.

Anyway the best news is no fucking Luke Watson. For that one I'll give Snor a high 5 and will absorb Newman and even Rose with ease!

Player per position
15 Rose,
Wings JP, Odwa Twin, Nokwe
13 AD, Newman
12 Jean,
10 Grant,
9 Janno, Januarie
8 Kankowski,
7 Juan, Deysel
6 Schalk, Brussouw,
Locks Andries Bekker, Muller, Sykes
3 John Smith,
2 Bismarck, Strauss
1 Beast, Wiaan du Preez

Lee Grant

Have to agree with jason about Kockott although his discipline is crap. Not the worst goal kicker either.

I'd have Vermaak ahead of him but both, plus FdP, would be ahead of Januarie.

In your opinion, what chance does Brussow have of starting as openside flanker against the Lions in the 1st test? I know that the Boks love to bash people off the ball rather than fetch it, but Brussouw is the best SAffer fetcher I have seen since Krige, and I feel that he may offer more than Burger.

What is the status of JdV's injury?

PS - Let's hope that Jacque Fourie doesn't get an injury on his honeymoon.

Jean & Bekker was ready to play against the Cheetahs on the weekend but Rassie decided to give his CC players a run.

Think Brussouw have a excellent change of starting, Schalk will be a good impact losie you can use in all three positions but I dont think Snor will pick this way. Anyway I am not worried which one will start, just glad for Brussouws part. After this weekend I thought Stegman maybe even better then Brussouw as a fetcher. The Brutes suffer when he was cited and came good when he returned. He is a real hard worker.

Schalk an impact player. Wow. Things have changed. Could be a good ploy though. Let him loose for 30 minutes, possibly even at 8?

I don't think Kockot was ever a chance to be honest. Snor has man love for Januarie and Vermaak can not be ignored - he was excellent.

Bulls to be added probably:

Kirchner
Habana
Akona (?)
Olivier
Fourie du Preez
Spies
Rossouw
Matfield
Botha
Steenkamp

Werner Kruger? Or will he add Jannie Doep as cover for 3?
Morne Steyn. Surely he deserves it way more than Grant?

Pretty much agree with your list. Think if the Brutes go all the way, surely Morne Steyn will be added. We both know he will play a huge role for your lot.

Does that mean Franny Steyn & jantjes would not have made the squad? They are both injured aren't they?

Both injured. Jantjes will be out for the season, but Steyn hopefull will be back. Not to sure but he also look like on his way to France, so maybe he is a gorner.

Look like Jacques Fourie will play in the 15 jersey if AD Jacobs slot in 13.
