Well done to the Reds! Haven't seen the game yet but a win in Auckland is a rare thing, albeit the Blues are in a bad headspace at the moment.

What can you do when a big man with mascara gets excited?

Good win to hopefully get the season back on track but will be much harder tests in a weeks to come.

I had the Reds at 13plus and you could imagine my excitement when Shipperly picked up that loose ball at the end with one man to beat. Then similarly you can imagine my feeling of hatred towards him for kicking the bloody thing out and leaving me dangling with a 12 point lead! Haha but seriously i'm just happy they got the win, a bonus point would have been icing on the cake but I have a good feeling for the rest of the season.

That was a top win by the Reds and brought a smile to the dial of this old rugby fan.

Most of what needs to be said has been said already but it's good to see both the Reds and the Brumbies later, winning most of the collision events and following through after players went to ground.

Looks like Oz teams, including the other three, (some, or most of the time, depending on which one we are talking about) are getting the idea of retaliating first at ruck time to protect their ball and having a go at the other team's ruck on those occasions when it is "on" but not if it isn't.

As others have indicated: Simmons had his best Super game for some time and all he needs is to keep his discipline intact. Unfortunately he doesn't have a good role model in Horwill, one of the most penalised players in the competition.

Loved the two fetchers who complemented themselves well and though it made for a light scrum it hardly mattered at the start with the Myth absent, though it faltered later on.

Let's all hope that Lucas can stay healthy as this could be his time with QC (Quade Cooper) absent. His versatility is a mixed blessing but his work at fullback last year plus his specialist play at 10 last night will be noted by Deans in his "bench candidates" list.

Good to see Genia back to good form. He had a couple of ordinary box kicks, ever a weaker point of his game, but many of them challenged the Blues. Good to hear the Kiwi commentators crow over him but he has to bring a bit more to his game. He is not good when his forwards don't show up to play; not many scrummies are, but to be one of the Wallaby greats he has to make a difference in such games, as Catchpole, Hipwell and even NFJ did.

Good to see Higginbotham play well too: he has had good matches this year but they were usually flawed, as many of his Wallabies' appearances were, with clumsiness or the fog of red mist. Well played that man.

The Blues were a rabble sometimes: their lineout was 2nd rate in the first half and they watched the ruck too much instead of making a difference. To their credit they came back after a horror start, but for a lot of the game they lacked heart and onfield leadership. In general: they looked poorly coached; mind you, Pat Lam made no handling errors last night.*

* ... except maybe handlling the bench eg: taking off Nonu early: Stanley played well from the bench but Ranger could have been subbed instead.

Simmons was busy. He was quite involved

The Reds made a mess of the Blues lineout which Simmons was heavily involved in.

The bloke has been working out. Last year I thought he was a bit weedy but his arms are starting to look like cannons...........a bit more wouldn't hurt.

I think he will become a great wallaby lock. He is a good scrummager and is mobile around the park. He needs to put a bit more hurt in his tackles though

Great win by the Reds. Eden park is a graveyard

To be fair Flanker don't add a lot of weight to scrums these days.

Lots of Simmonds love on here, but a poor one-on-one missed tackle led to one of the Blues trys.

It was good to see a more upbeat and purposeful Genia, he had his best game for a while. I wonder whether his uncertainty over his inside back partner in many of the recent games has led to him trying to do too much and not executing well? He seemed to 'trust' Lucas to play the pivot role and focused purely on his own game. I thought Benny was excellent by the way, a very under-rated player. Forwards have gradually turned things around over the last few games. they look to have more cohesion and drive, and as LG says went very well in the collision.

Still plenty to do but that was a very satisfying result.

I dont think it can be understated how much easier Lucas and Genia jobs were by gettings the front foot ball afforded to them by players like Digby, Harris and Finger getting over the advantage line. It just makes life so much easier for everyone, and has massive positive side-effects.

Agree. If we have fit replacements he should be dropped completely for a couple of games...or have far more effective learning sessions with the coaches.
or you could teach him to become a dirty bastard of a player, Australia has been missing the mongrel dirty attitude that SA 2nd rowers have had for years, we could develop him into a rough fighter style player, a bit like Adam Byrnes but with playing skills

Just got home, Reds are improving. Excited about Gill and Beau in Tandem, worked a treat. Gill was soooo focused. Good to see Ant back

Was an article in the paper about Higginbotham becoming our permanent 8, makes sense, he has performed well there, allows him to play a more versatile game, whilst his scrum clearances don't seem to be an issue anymore.

For next week I'd be happy if he stayed there, even if Robinson is injured. Quirk or Shatz to play 6.

Agree Tiger - but I know his much preferred position is 6. Wonder if HIS preference accounts for much or does the good of the "team" take precedence
