New South Wales Waratahs lose prop Benn Robinson for Super 14 season

By Adrian Warren
May 09, 2010

New South Wales Waratahs have suffered a blow in their quest to make the Super 14 finals, with prop Benn Robinson sidelined for the remainder of the season.
The Wallabies prop reopened a fracture in his forearm in the first half of Saturday's 46-19 win over the Chiefs in Hamilton.

The victory lifted NSW up to third and gave them a distinct chance of hosting a semi-final at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Victory over the fifth-placed Hurricanes at the SFS on Friday night combined with a home loss for the second-placed Stormers against the ladder-leading Bulls would be enough for NSW.

However, they will have to continue their quest for a maiden Super rugby title without linchpin Robinson.

"We were always going to take him off at halftime,'' Waratahs coach Chris Hickey said.

"Our doctor thought it best to check him and an x-ray showed the fracture had opened up again.

"He will have a scan on Monday and will most likely require a plate to ensure that it gets the best long-term healing.

"That would rule him out for the remainder of the Super 14.''

Hickey said he wasn't sure whether Robinson could miss the start of the Wallabies program, but stated that six weeks was the generally accepted time for a fracture to heal.

He was hopeful another Wallabies prop, Sekope Kepu, would be right to return against the Hurricanes after suffering a torn calf two weeks ago.

"The diagnosis was probably four to six weeks, but we will just have to wait and see. Sometimes players recover more quickly than expected,'' Hickey said.

"We will be assessing his fitness at the start of this week and we will also look at Jeremy Tilse and Dan Palmer as two of our other options.''

While wary of a Hurricanes outfit that scored 36 unanswered points against Queensland Reds in Wellington last Friday, Hickey was delighted the Waratahs had regained control of their own destiny.

"That's what we've been hoping for all along,'' Hickey said. "If we win the next game, then we'll be confident of a place in the finals.

And if the Stormers were to lose to the Bulls, we still possibly could get a second place finish and a home semi.''

Hickey reported one other injury doubt for the Hurricanes clash, with outside back Sosene Anesi hurting his shoulder in Hamilton.

Rather Sosene than Benn...arrgh...

That's it...we are finished!

Shopping list for next season, an international standard prop...

Fuc* the Tahs, what about the Wallabies!!!!!

With Robinson gone for a while and Weekes (a potential Wallaby project player) broken... our propping depth is way way down.

Maafu has been alright for the brums as well with Benn at LH. Dunning is still there or thereabouts, so we should have replacements but it just won't be the same withouth fat cat. The good news is that he should be back by the 3N.

Unfortunately that means BA will probably move to LH for the NH/Fiji matches when we really need him clocking up some TH gametime.

Far better for our 3N campaign for Alexander to be moved back to tighthead as soon as Robbie Deans gets his hands on him, and find the next-best-performing LHP to fill in with the wallabies. That way BA will have time to bulk up a bit and readjust to THP and then we will be good to go when Fat Cat is fixed.

Put TPN at prop for the rest of the Waratah's games and Ma'fu from the Brumbies at Wallaby games. This is a blessing in disguise!

I'm gutted to lose Fat Cat. He shouldn't have played. Fucking ridiculous to rush him back.

We can thank our lucky stars that TPN doenst appear (yet) to have been more seriously injured and out for a few weeks. Yet again, piss poor management by those that are paid to know best - and fail with alarming regularity. WTF wasnt TPN taken off early in the second half? Job had largely been done and Fitzy isnt exactly a mug replacement. Dingo must be tearing his hair out the way his prize national assets are being driven into extended layoffs.

Regardless, Robinson should have been on the sidelines for 6 weeks for any kind of fracture.

Having seen our luck against the hapless Chiefs, I now know without a doubt we're not going to beat the Canes. Bye bye finals.

they passed fitness tests and it was a do or die game, any management is going to play them, any player can get injured at any time, just luck really.

No, you can't defend the decision to play him. Was a bad call.

Ben Daley probably just got his lucky break.

and so did the wallabies (long term!), this is a great chance to have another young prop getting big game experience before the World Cup.

I hope Daley gets a start in at least one of the "bigger" tests

you can defend it absolutely, and i say that pissed as shit that he is out again. If the tahs lost they were out of the finals race, they had fitness tests, TPN, Benn and Horne all did them, they all passed, so you play them, you dont sit around coming up with what ifs and whens, you just play em and hope for the best.

its like saying Beale might get injured next week and he is our best fullback so we shouldnt play him o the possibility of injury.

So now, having brought Robinson back too early we are going to do the same thing to Kepu. He'll aggravate his injury. This is the stuff of nightmares. Had we kept Robinson out for two more weeks, he might have been available for the finals. Now he's no chance. We could have squeezed through with Palmer and then used him on the bench in the finals as by then he would have had a couple of weeks experience at the higher level.

Instead we kicked him in the guts, sent him home and selected Tilse as the bench prop. As soon as Tilse came on the scrum went to custard, only saved by the Chiefs running out of props. I don't care how good a prop is round the field, he has to be able to stand up in the scrum first and foremost, otherwise you get owned. At S14 level its critical. The Hurricanes will have Tilse for breakfast.

What we should do now is put Palmer to LHP and if a prop needs replacing put TPN to loose head and bring on Fitzpatrick as hooker (assuming TPN's not crocked too). That's the best I can come up with. Is there anyone in the juniors who can hold up the scrum at loose head off the bench?

As I said on another thread, Hickey's use/misuse of the bench is a major problem. He is incapable of thinking more than one week ahead. Wrecking player's seasons by mismanagement is grounds for early termination IMO.
