Aussie Player Exodus

I think Wales do it all the time as does Scotland no? Louis Rees Zammit springs to mind, plays for Gloucester yet debuted for Wales recently. I think Scotland just picked up someone like that too. Cameron Redpath, played for England u20s (he was even selected in England's senior tour of SA but didn't get capped), plays for Bath and will be capped for Scotland this Six Nations.

Scotland pretty much don't care where you play, with a mild preference for England if not at home, primarily because they don't have the financial resources or available domestic gametime to have it any other way.

There's also an understanding, partially from professionalism, partially from the 3/3.5/4 Nations, 1 Country thing, that a lot of kids will be eligible for more than one of the three nations, and, at U20s level, that taking the "local system", the "better system", or even "the system that will have you" doesn't really mean anything, particularly since Wales dropped their U20s as their A side a few years ago. Benny Vellacott of Wasps played U20s for Scotland, at times starting over wee Horne, but has been fairly firm on pushing for an England cap since. I'm sure there are others, but it's midnight, and I CBF thinking or looking further.

Wasn’t there a controversy with Wales playing non eligible players years ago?

Yep Shane Howarth who's grandmother was meant to be born in Wales, but wasn't she was born in England or something.
I personally dislike the Grandparent and even parent rule gives too many options, I like where you were born or reside fullstop!

This is in the same competition so it is easily comparable in terms of form.

I can't imagine any eligibility rules for us would see coaches selecting debutants from Europe.

Inevitably it may be something Rugby Australia needs to consider though, selectors should be able to decipher the difference in form between different competition. Especially if it’s in line with the above suggestion that the player return to Australia on his next contract.

I don’t think we’re quite there yet, and the emphasis should be on rewarding players who are still here, but moving forward i think it may be inevitable as European/Japanese rugby gets richer.

I’m sure you’re right and I know he was pretty hard done by with the selectors somewhat forcing his hand to go OS as it seemed a wallabies jersey wasn’t an option at the time. But without google I’d never know he’s been killing it in Ireland. I think the giteau laws flaw is that a late bloomer like Fardy who, according to google, are in top form aren’t eligible. whereas Foley and Phelps (who I wouldn’t pick) could be selected next test.

We have changed the rule now though and two players from overseas who don't meet the Giteau law can be picked if it is so desired.

I expect this will be a RWC thing mostly because any other season or time of year it is difficult to make it work with the release windows.

Scott Fardy needs to be in the Wallabies

Helps when your also playing in the best side in the competition. Leinster have been dominating Pro and europe for a few years now.

Kind of like how Skelton looked amazing at Saracens, he does not look as good now his in France and with a team that's battling it out mid table compared to winning every game.

I would pick Fardy at 6 for the Wallabies, he has to play most of his rugby in the 2nd row with Leinster though. The way the Irish system works he was signed at lock not flanker.

I guess it would be a left field pick for the wallabies picking Michael Phelps on the giteau law as he’s not an Australian citizen and hasn’t played 70 tests for the wallabies. I’m hoping it was auto correct and not me losing my marbles on that one. Could be either.
BH, Since they never enacted the two player rule these last tests I kind of forgot that change.

I guess a difference to Australia selecting from anywhere is that unlike Scotland, Ireland, Wales etc. we dont have the luxury of switching the tv on at 2pm on a Sunday and still watching our players play in a competition live. If we let them all go overseas eventually there is very little exposure for the sport and its fans to watch its products on a weekly basis. If Aus was in Europe i'd say let the flood gates open.

I would guess we won't see it this year either with COVID-19 quarantine restrictions still being in force. Makes it very hard to bring back a player when they have to sit in a hotel for two weeks.

If we manage to have an EOYT to Europe maybe we'll see it in play then (although I highly doubt those will happen this year).

The RWC is clearly the prime time to bring in foreign based players because you can have them for an extended time. Even without COVID-19, the international windows are short and the player you'd bring in from Europe would miss half the buildup that the local squad benefits from.

Think you missed the sarcasm. Most people even on this forum don't watch overseas competitions but as soon as the rhetoric starts it is on. Bring back Liam Gill.

It was a joke mate. It was me going back to this comment

Everyone’s a better player when you don’t watch them too often

The last time most people (and posters on this forum) saw any Australian player is when they played Super Rugby. As soon as someone reads a report out of Europe or Japan that a player had a good game you get the whole "Player X should have never have gone overseas and it is RA fault that they did, Player X should be signed immediately and picked to start for the Wallabies"
