Aussie coaching exodus

IMO, this issue is equally as important, if not more-so than the player exodus discussion. There’s so many quality Australia coaches overseas, and our Super Rugby coaches are all comparitive rookies compared to some of them.

Scott Fardy just signed as defensive coach of Conacht.

Dan McKellar obviously leaving.

Brad Thorn likely to lose Reds HC role, future unknown.

RA needs central contracting of the coaches, with pathways between Super Rugby, U20s, Wallaby Assistant positions etc

There's not enough positions for the coaching talent we have. Even if we had infinite money we'd still lose them and I think it's more healthy for coaches to go overseas than players, much longer careers. We already have two former HCs taking a role under Foote at the Rebels.

Are you suggesting that Cheika, Friend and Les Kiss coach Super?

Can we do a bit of an audit of Aussies coaching overseas professionally at the moment? It would be interesting to see who is out there around the place

Coaching Connacht is much better than coaching a Shute Shield team (probably the Rats), we should celebrate that.

Australian coaches working overseas is not necessarily a problem - I think every Wallabies head coach, and most Super head coaches, need to have some overseas experience on their resume. The key thing is that RA needs to be working with these coaches through that time to make sure they're not forgotten at home.

For instance, if Dan McKellar was to take over the Wallabies in 2028 (or, let's be honest, a year or two earlier), he'll be much better prepared after a few years being a head coach at Leicester, than being a Wallabies assistant for that time.

Coaches going overseas isn’t an issue, but at the same time we cant continually export coaching talent and not bring qualified and experiences coaches home. Theres a lack of coaching IP in Australia with experience as head coaches

Laurie Fisher retiring at seasons end, not an exodus overseas but still a massive loss of Coaching IP from the game in Australia
Hopefully there's an opportunity to get him involved in coaching development in the game. There's a hell of a lot of knowledge he can impart and might be open to something like that having retired from "full-time coaching".

Great to hear Petrus isn't lost to Australian Rugby. Just became an Aus Citizen so you imagine he's commited.

Wants to start a scrum school to focus on developing young props for Aus.
“I’ve had so many phone calls from dads and mums saying, my son is an aspiring tight-head, loose-head, hooker, lock, whatever, how can we get it better?

“My aim is to stay in Australia for the time being, but I want to make a difference in young players, I want to be someone who could breed Australian props.

Great idea. Such a specialist position will get plenty of attention from Clubs, Schools and Parents. There are a few similar like Scrum Strong in Sydney.

Petrus from memory had purchased a place on the Gold Coast, so really wouldn’t surprise me to see him in and around the Reds next year. Or even any of the other Aus teams, it’s relatively cheap to fly someone in and out for the same day to do some consultancy work.
