Ive excluded matches featuring Australian teams playing in South Africa and ive also excluded any game which didn't feature in the top 10 overall pay-tv ratings for that night(i would have had to search further to find the ratings).

Team(games played) / Total / Average
Reds(11) / 1'443'300 / 131'000
Tahs(8) / 920'000 / 115'000
Brumbies(9) / 984'000 / 109'000
Rebels(7) / 620'000 / 103'000
Force(6) / 629'000 / 89'850

Some results may be skewed due to the opposition they have played, so out of the top 10 games these are the teams which featured in the head to heads:

Team / Games
Reds: 7
Brumbies: 3
Tahs: 3
Rebels: 2
Force: 0

Now, this figure examines the ratio of average ratings/registered players in the franchises state(in theory, the higher the figure the better).
Tahs: 1.00
Reds: 1.15
Brumbies: 4.00
Force: 5.20
Rebels: 6.05

Overall only 3 games featured above 150'000, which at a quick glance is well down on the 2012 comparison, it appears as though the average across all games may have increased slightly but the blockbusters seem to be missing(Reds v Brumbies only drew 143'000), the same match in 2012 actually drew 145'000.. Reds v Tahs opener in 2012 drew 194'000, in 2013 it only drew 174'000...

Given the games seem to be more entertaining in 2013, and Australian teams seem more competitive it presents some worrying figures for the ARU.....

Have Foxtel (with sports packages) subscriptions gone up or down? I think illegal streaming might have something to do with these figures, these days you can get easily get excellent streams (some HD) for every game that don't cut out at all.

Foxtel subscribers have increased annually at just over the population growth levels for the past 5 or 6 years..

I wonder what the foxtel league and afl games get?
Intriguing that the Reds lead that head to head stat and the Tahs are nowhere: Tahs crowds are poor too, though they should improve based on recent performances, so they are not pulling their weight.

Like an ocean liner, the Waratahs will take a long while to turn things around. The on-field performances are certainly a lot better this season, but there are still some huge gaps in their roster (eg the halves).

If they continue to perform well, their popularity will return. Have faith.

That is a useless ratio. Better off looking at the per city viewer breakdowns.

The other numbers are at least a little more meaningful.

obviously examining per city breakdown would be better... if you can find those specific figures then feel free to post them

You have to pay for the survey data, unfortunately, unless you find someone else who already has. Projected numbers under 5000 are probably unreliable.

But to get a rough idea of relative oz rugby viewers (000s) you can take a look at the FTA 2011 test matches.

*Total includes pay TV.

Most of the base is in Sydney and Brisbane (you'd need regional TAM numbers to get Canberra). There were extra occasional viewers for RWC finals in SYD/BNE and MEL/ADL/PER - but these guys would not be watching much Super Rugby at all.

Didn't the gf in 2011 break the record for the most watched pay TV program?

What were the figures like before the NRL and AFL started?

Remember something like like that. Dunno. The numbers I had:

Supe
2011 QLD vs CRU FOX SN 518,000

RWC SF
2011 NZL vs AUS FOX SU 719,000
2011 NZL vs AUS CH9 SU 1,788,000

What were the figures like before the NRL and AFL started?
Not a lot of difference I reckon.

That's not good, you can understand the figures low when they clash with NRL/AFL but you'd think people would watch when nothing else is on. Do we at least beat A-league ratings?

It's close.
