Axed Queensland Reds coach Phil Mooney will act as a part-time coaching consultant with the Brisbane Broncos.

Mooney was dumped by the Queensland Rugby Union in September after leading the Reds to 12th and 13th in his two seasons in charge at Ballymore.

Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen on Thursday confirmed to AAP the cross-code appointment where Mooney will be at the call of head coach Ivan Henjak.

"He wants to coach, preferably coach in rugby union but he hasn't got a job at the moment and he has some talent and some skills and we hope he can offer us something," Cullen said.

"He is very highly regarded."

I wouldn't count him out of coaching the Reds again

my only worry is that he has been in a position to identify the young up and coming talent in QLD rugby, hopefully he doesnt pass this on to the Broncos Recruitment department

A cynical part of me seriously considers this as one of the big reasons the Broncos have gotten him on board.

apparently he's working with the Toyota Cup Under 20 team, so that's a possibility for sure.

However, it could work both ways is a year or two.

It doesn't need to be a cynical part of you.. You're damn straight they want to know all about the Union juniors..
Can't imagine he's in there to fix the fucking scrum.

in the same breath, Broncos have some of the best scouts in the country, im sure they would have identified any young rugby players without having to hit up Mooney..

Maybe they are genuinely just interested in using his talent as a coach, heck he might even be able to talk a few Brisbane Toyota Cup players to switch over.

Yes but in Mooney they probably have someone with enough knowledge to judge whether they would be a success in League or not.

if they signed Mooney purely to target rugby union's younger players then they should have gone with Paul Carozza the Reds Academy coach, or alternatively one of the Qld Schoolboy coaches
