ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

Is establishing a National Club Competition necessarily all that artificial? Yes, from the article they did mention using amalgamated squads based along existing structures but that would likely only be for the sake of Perth and Melbourne representation. At a stretch perhaps even Canberra (but...

ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

Anyone know anything from the meeting between the ARU and the Sydney club presidents yesterday?

ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

I don't think its a bad idea. We need to develop the club competitions outside of Sydney and Brisbane more in order to reduce the burden on both to continually provide the bulk of the talent to Super Rugby. Sure, it may hurt the two traditionally strong competitions but it will also create opportunity...

ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

Really? That much for website development. Stuff that. Redirect those funds back into junior club rugby. Imagine how many new junior clubs you could get up and running with that sort of money, or how many new schoolkids you could introduce to the game. Hell, if you looked to invest not even 10%...

    Shute Shield 2013

Sorry to be a bit of a pedant Hugh but MMM played Easts last week and won reasonably comfortably (on the scoreboard at least) in the end. But I do agree with you, they played there GF two weeks ago. Pity. That aside, I thought Eastwood did that quite comfortably today with plenty left for Uni...

Choose 4 clubs would you include in a national comp

According to G. Robinson - the clubs will be meeting with the ARU next week to discuss the model the SS will likely take in the future were the ARU will put through their proposal and the clubs will table their alternatives. It also mentioned that the ARU were going to table their model for a...

    Waratahs 2014

From what I've seen of Hodge, he never struck me as a player that was of Super Rugby standard. He's quick but lacks the physicality required to compete at the professional levels of the game today.

Choose 4 clubs would you include in a national comp

That appears quite reasonable. Someone could probably calculate the cost of travel, accommodation and ground hire over the course of such a comp and use that figure as the licence fee. That way to ensure that they at least have the ability to afford to compete.

Maximising the opportunity of Rugby 7s in Australia

I'd imagine Scots are there from their results at their own tournament, the LM kids are there as its seen as a vital development tool for indigenous kids (which it is), the sports High have the talent en mass to compete and Greg's are the defending champions and runners up on the GC last year...

    S18 on its way

You can just tell that the circus that is the SANZAR negotiation period is just around the corner.

Choose 4 clubs would you include in a national comp

Back when I was playing Colts at Randwick, I was still living at home in Camden. I used to travel into Maroubra or Coogee twice a week for training. I wasn't the only one doing that either. It's was about chasing your opportunities. Also, the way I view it is that having one strong...

Sydney Junior Rugby Union - 2013

I was going off the ISA guidelines which are around 80 minutes per day.

Choose 4 clubs would you include in a national comp

Having three clubs based out West tends to stretch resources and participation particularly at the junior level particularly thin. Too thin for them to be jostling for position and numbers. What I was musing over was the combination of efforts. It could help consolidate the few clubs in the...

Choose 4 clubs would you include in a national comp

Joint ventures would be the pathway I'd like to eventuate for the majority of clubs, and it's good see someone willing to look beyond traditional rivalries for the good of the game. I think joint ventures would be worthwhile looking into and would add real depth to such ventures in regards to...

    Beale to Tahs, where?

I look at from a different perspective. Tactical kicking is a aggressive action to put the opposition on the back foot. But it needs to be executed very well in order for it to be so. Otherwise, its aimless which tends to be the majority of kicking options in Aus rugby at the moment.

Sydney Junior Rugby Union - 2013

It's no more than 80 minutes of Rugby in a day for juniors.

    Beale to Tahs, where?

I think 2013 was all about installing an attacking mindset. Effectively reprogramming the squad after a few years of rather poor performances. Next year should be about installing some more tactical kicking into the game plan.

    Shute Shield 2013

It's better than nothing. The point is, they need to get the structure right. They need to ensure the standard of play is fairly even across the board and that they have something people would want to watch. Once they achieve that then there may be scope to look to involve teams from outside the...

    Shute Shield 2013

That would fall under the competitions business plan. Get the weekly game shown live across the country or at least via an accessible media of professional quality. While there is a national replay (Tuesday 3:30 am) it's too restrictive in terms of building viewing interest. There needs to be...
