ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

That would actually be a interesting exercise. I wonder how many of the current clubs would be interested in forming their own 'Unions' in aid of autonomy and development within their allotted districts.

ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

I don't see any reason why they couldn't resurrect that concept to form teams in some sort of representative national competition. North Harbour/South Harbour and Newcastle/Hunter (being the strongest Country Union).

ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

I'd prefer the representative model. However, I doubt the country teams would be viable when considering the distances required to be travelled in order to train and compete for players. Same for SA and the NT. A combined team would be unworkable in that regard. The best way of approaching it...

    Shute Shield 2014

Seems like more of the same old stuff to me.

    Flashback to 96 .

Professionalism has taken a great deal of the emphasis on skills and execution away from the game (has in League as well) and more onto the power athlete. It's quite clear when you look at the players of today and many of the issues with executing a basic catch/pass/catch.

    Shute Shield 2013

You provide a lot of good reasoning for the establishment of a Universities competition for U21's when taking into account the access to facilities. You could essentially train as a near professional while studying. Most Universities have rugby clubs, so they already have a clubs to adopt and...

    The value of Australia A

I'd like to see it return. Could be used as a means of hosting developing international squads and bringing Rugby to more regional areas of the country. Imagine Australia A hosting Russia in Tamworth or Darwin etc.

    Rugby TV Shows

And there's actually a D3 Championship for smaller schools as well.

Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament - 2014

No. They met in the Waratah Shield and Auggies gave them a touching up.

ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

The answer is simple but the clubs may not like it as it would be too much like the ARC for their liking. Make it a representative thing. Remove the club element in terms of competing as individual entities. Provide the clubs with a say or at the very least an interest in the competition, play...

ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

I agree that asking guys to sacrifice the time and effort they current do for nothing as opposed to the small amount they were receiving is wrong. I have said above (page before this one) I suspect clubs would more than likely prefer to look to source income as a means of replacing the grants...

ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

My point was College Football players are actually professionals and have been for a very long time now. They are on in effect contracts from anywhere from $80-100,000 a season when you take into account all their peaks and privileges. We're discussing the move back to amateurism with no...

ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

I'm a bit of a College Football fan and I tend to watch a lot of the game day shows. There was a discussion about whether College Footballers should be paid. The case against it outlined that on average these guys are on scholarship worth anywhere between $30-50,000 per year and already receive...

ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

That thought did occur to me. I doubt clubs will go for the proposal. I'd imagine they'll look to source a means of replacing the $60,000 the ARU would provide before they gave away their ability to retain talent. If that was the case then the ARU could use the funds to help make Penrith more...

ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

It's a tough issue. On one side of it, if teams stop paying player's (and if it's around $10,000 a season per player max, not suggesting every 1st grader is earning that) it could allow the district clubs to use the excess funds for development reasons particularly at the junior levels on the...

ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

I could imagine some of the language used wouldn't have been appropriate for publishing if my experience playing Colts in the Sydney club comp is any indicator.

    Waratahs 2014

They have Cory Walton in their stable as well. Gave Corey Brown a start against the Lions. Norths are becoming the Force's NSW feeder team from the looks of it.

Not a lot of detail. http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-union/union-news/feathers-fly-over-controversial-plan-to-strip-sydney-clubs-of-best-players-20130912-2tnmo.html Just mentions the tension around the loss of players and were open to the NCC.

ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

According to the article I've just finished reading. It was a fiery affair. Though, apparently the clubs aren't opposed to the idea of a national club competition. It's supposedly still in the 'conceptual' stages. Which doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

I don't disagree. That's why I've always been a fan of using a representative model along the lines of the ITM Cup rather than standalone clubs. I have only really given any thought to the use of standalone clubs as a means of getting something off the ground. The down side is that it would lead...
