    Reds 2011

Never thought that Ioane was anywhere near slow for a winger, but did think that he was more of a power winger than an out and out speed merchant like Davies. Ioane seems to have a lower centre of gravity when he runs that allows him to play well above his weight. Ioane's running style is...

    Melbourne Rebels 2011

I don't know if I would put Al Campbell in front of any of those locks (including Hoani) myself. Luke Jones, maybe, but Jones has more talent than Al. My concern would be that the Rebels outside backs are sorely lacking in the speed department. They will definitely be a muscle / bash team...

    Barbarians vs South Africa, Twickenham

Slight stumble? He was good one game, then downright awful the next. Rinse, repeat. Only reason he wasn't dropped is because of injuries. But hats off to Mitchell - turned it around brilliantly. Finally showed some consistently at test level. Would have to be our first choice winger, now.

    Brumbies 2011

Lee; I saw it but let it go. It's more than fair enough really, although it is likely that the Reds are not the weak proposition they were just a mere year ago. The Brumbies are a real bogy team for the Reds (and have been for fourteen years - since the Brumbies' inception), with the Reds...

    The "Finds" of Wallaby EOYT

Tend to agree about Houston. He goes missing a little too often, and his work rate is a little low. You can tolerate a lower workrate if the player will make several big energy plays every game; with Houston, it's a big energy play every few games. He's a lesser Lyons, and Lyons really...

    The "Finds" of Wallaby EOYT

Actually, like McCalman, Roe went well in his first few tests and was touted briefly as the long term number 8 for the Wallabies, before getting injured. McMalman was unheralded, had barely played Super rugby, and opposition teams didn't know him. McCalman went very well in the Tri-Nations, in...

AB's - Referees are not being fair to them

Austin - not only that, but the multiple of cheeky 9s who try to kick the ball at the same time as the number 8 picks it up. It's a practice I hate.

    Sam Harris

Someone's already mentioned Jim Williams and Spies, but Naza mentioning John Roe in another thread reminded me. Toutai Kefu (former centre) and John Roe (former five-eighth) are another two former backs converted into number 8s, rather successfully. Then there's Banahan, that average English...

    The "Finds" of Wallaby EOYT

Hmmm, don't know if I would yet agree that McCalman is a big step up on Fava, Brown and John Roe yet. McCalman's NH tour left a lot to be desired for me after promising performances in the Tri-Nations. Brown, Fava and Roe (and Hoiles) all had multiple good S15 seasons through their careers - I...

Player of the Year: 3-2-1 Wallabies v France, Paris

Don't know if I'd go as far as Reddy!'s trolling, but I think we've derailed this thread enough.

Player of the Year: 3-2-1 Wallabies v France, Paris

Hmmm, brave call then. I disagree, of course, and think that the poor kid has been given too much hype and should be left hype free to get a few more years to develop, but good luck to young Douglas. Although, I am a bit curious to know what you have seen in Douglas to say he will be better...

Player of the Year: 3-2-1 Wallabies v France, Paris

Why is Douglas ahead of Horwill? When/what has Douglas shown that he should be ahead of a fit Horwill? I know there is some Douglas-love on this board, but some of it (like the above) is over the top. The guy had a good rookie season and he generally held his own - which was very impressive...

    Brumbies 2011

Ack, tried to post a reply then accidentally closed the tab. Much shorter reply written. The Brumbies only ever considered Alexander as a LH, as evidenced by their recruitment - TH Palmer (who admittedly can cover LH), TH Jono Owen in the Academy. There's Jerry Y, but this likely may be his...

    Wallabies 1-8, 16-19

By the way, I think that Horwill has the potential to be a better lock than Vickerman (albeit, a different type of lock - Horwill will never touch Vickerman in the lineout). But, Horwill sadly seems more injury prone than even Vickerman was.

    Wallabies 1-8, 16-19

Lee - I think Vickerman was our premier lock for a few years, definitely, but also remember that we hardly had a lot of world class locks in that period. He was a lineout leader, and did the hard, tight work. I liked him, and indeed still think he was a very good player. In his prime, he...

    France vs Wallabies, EOYT 2010

McCalman hasn't been going to well on the tour. If you intend to replace McCalman, then Higgers makes more sense on the bench than Hodgson.
