    The Wallaby gameplan

FWIW, as of this hour, and days before the match, the forecast for Sunday in Auckland is rain and NW winds.

RWC 2011 SF2: Australia vs. New Zealand

But Gnostic, he might do a better job than Marto, working off a low base?

    Brumbies 2012

Yes, saw that. Staggering is it not that he's proposing this imminent move back to SA/Boks rugby right after signing, was it?, a 4 year fixed term contract with the Brumbies.

RWC 2011 SF2: Australia vs. New Zealand

Yes, Lindommer. The tiresome sociopathology of the anonymous troll emerging from the darkened room called hate. A species that will never die.

RWC 2011 SF2: Australia vs. New Zealand

I agree with you VFR. As did Link far more importantly, who suggested just this selection of Lucas before the RWC started. Lucas not tested at this level, but, bar Samoa, neither was Phipps by a long chalk. Phipps is IMO a totally 'wasted' selection as there is no versatility or even...

TV Ratings for the World Cup

TOCC, don't quite get you here. Which aggregated or 'split' other figures are you talking of? Do you reference the 807,000 figure below, which I thought was FTA only?

    RWC 2011 - Quarter final 3 : Springbokke v. Wallabies CLOSED

Spoken with the loyalty to one's own of a true ex-Churchie boy! My son's there; loves the place and all things QC (Quade Cooper) partly as he's so good with the boys when he comes back.

    Poll: Cooper at 10?

    whatever it takes!!

    Poll: Cooper at 10?

Yep, sorry. Got too metaphorical re 'coming home'. Playing for 3 or 4 not too exciting though.

TV Ratings for the World Cup

Thanks BH. Interesting though that an S15 final with one Aus team still pulling more subscription viewers than a major Wallabies' match with all its national pizzazz in a heavily promoted RWC context. As WJ says, will be really interesting to see Foxtel's figures next Monday after this SF.

    Poll: Cooper at 10?

One thing's indisputable: QC (Quade Cooper) plays even vaguely as badly at 10 as he did in the QF, we come home Oct 17. He's not been improving this RWC, since Italy he's deteriorating. Saying 'he just can't be as bad as that again' is just statistically highly risky (or wishful) thinking in a crucial knockout...

TV Ratings for the World Cup

Agree WJ. And I don't think 807,000 for the QF was too great (e.g., the ABC way beat that with, of all things, Grand Designs Revisited). Be interesting to compare with historical RWC comparables, if available. But now the general media are excitedly reporting on the valiant QF win, and we...

    RWC 2011 - Quarter final 3 : Springbokke v. Wallabies CLOSED

ti12, not to disagree in any way, but I do think it's wise to remember that such outstanding individual performances can in part be catalysed by the calibre of the attitude of the whole team's efforts. I wouldn't mind betting that in part DP was as inspired by the huge character shown by his...

    RWC 2011 - Quarter final 3 : Springbokke v. Wallabies CLOSED

WJ, whilst I detest Growden's cringe-making use of the word 'triumph' to describe quite flawed Wallaby wins, this game in all its courage, grit, correct tackling techniques, relentlessness of application etc, vs 'the most experienced ever' RWC holders who threw the kitchen sink at us, was, in...

RWC 2011 SF2: Australia vs. New Zealand

Maybe, maybe not. This is now potentially the crowning moment for Deans, in every sense. If the team can beat the ABs on Oct 16, the Wallabies are likely to win the RWC, and Deans' multiple home and abroad vindications will be immense, even with just an SF win vs this opposition in this place...

    Congrats Aussies!

PB, I can honestly say: you're one of the many reasons I come back here. I always enjoy your vibrant spirit and comments, and I've learnt a huge amount about the qualities and traditions of SA rugby from you. All positive. Like others, thanks for this post. SA to now do a Wales or an Aussie and...

    The Wallaby gameplan

Cutter, just to add to your IMO perfectly correct and justified analysis, neither was there any evidence of cohesive, disciplined, well-drilled back line moves designed in support of any supposed game plan. For many matches now, it's appeared as though our back line theory is an odd and...

    RWC 2011 - Quarter final 3 : Springbokke v. Wallabies CLOSED

That's likely true on all the evidence. But there's also evidence to confirm that this appalling Kiwi crowd behaviour - the relentless desire to undermine a fine player allegedly for 'offences' against their national treasure but really a vicious, unsporting desire to undermine a clear and...

    RWC 2011 - Quarter final 3 : Springbokke v. Wallabies CLOSED

You're absolutely right. I have regularly critiqued that we rarely saw in these Wallabies the incredible grit, 'hard mind' and relentless determination and courage (for entire games) that has characterised the finest traditions in Australian sports generally, and great Australian winning teams...
