Wallabies 2025

This is probably 2026 chat but Stan had a fun piece trying to guess who would be the 1000th wallaby given Aidan Ross became #994 on the weekend.

I’m guessing Kalani gets capped so that will be 995 by the end of the year.

who are the next five and who gets to be #1000? Might be fun to come back and review sometime next year when it happens.

Who did Stan go with?

These are who I think will be in and around Wallabies conversation after 2026 Super. Not saying they'll all get a cap. I've numbered them how I think they'll go. We need props (loose head), scrumhalves and centres. Potentially fullbacks too with Wright injured.

I reckon it'll go loose head prop first, scrumhalf, centre, tight head prop then wunderkind outta nowhere Sid Harvey for #1000.

Van Nek, Ieli #996, R. Scott, Wilcox, McLeod

Brial, De Lutiis #999, Werchon, K. Thomas #995, Pakeho #998

Talataina, Wilson #997, Amatosero, Harvey #1000

Pearce, Burey, Dolly

Thomas would likely get a chance this tour knowing our injury luck.
I think Ieli if he can stay fit a chance of debut next year with Slips retiring. Assume we'll be without Tupou next year so that opens the door for De Luttis, Van Neck, Botha and Alatini. De Luttis needs to stay fit, Alatini needs to get past Van Neck. Both have higher ceilings than the more experienced Botha and Van Neck so wouldn't hate both of them getting the nod. They already see plenty in Sid the kid so I can see them sneaking him on the bench as wing and fullback coverage. Needs a solid year and probably needs to JAS to move to the centres at the Tahs (for everyone's sake!). Pakeho will have more experience than say McLeod but far less size which impact him at test footy this early. Dre understands how Kiss' game plan and is the most like for like swap for Len if we don't have access to him. Brial will also be in the frame. But he'll need to get by a lot of others including Cale. Hooper and Gleeson opens the door a bit.
My money is on Sid based he's already in Aus A squad and he's the closest to player to Tom Wright. He can also goal kick which would be attractive if we're not sold on Carter's.

is Harvey going to get game time with the Tahs though to force a Wallaby spot?

Kellaway, Potter, JAS and Jorgo all ahead of him.

DCTarget's thinking is good. Where are our weak points? Of course all it takes in Australian Rugby is an injury or two, and we have a weakpoint.

Fullback is weak, which is why Harvey is a shout. But similarly it could open a spot for Mac Grealy or Declan Meredith who I am thinking may end up at 15 for the Brumbies? Maybe Muirhead.

Suspect we will need a 12 pretty damn quick. I expect Pakeho to get capped next year but perhaps earlier than 1000. Maybe Bayley Kuenzle? Of course Feliuai shouldn't be forgotten as he's been around the Wallabies.

Jack Deb is left field - so I'll put Max Burey next to him. HMP too. I guess if we play a couple of games v Japan, we may trial things? A year out from a RWC???

In the pack I actually really like Tualima, but its about working out the best spot for him. I think Charlie Gamble is 1 injury away from a cap (I haven't seen anything in Samu yet that suggests he should be there).

I maintain Asiata has deserved a shot, but he sits in QLD let alone Australia is a big question. Of course Dolly in the west.

Prop a big question - I don't think Ieli is ready yet, but after a Super Rugby season? Maybe? van Nek must be close but a fit de Luttis is probably ahead of him. I am also a Dan Botha fan. Pearce needs a bit more set piece certainty before considered. Other than Ieli, not many young loose heads ready yet.

So without knowing who we are playing against, my tips would be:

995 - Thomas - this tour
996 to 997 - Pakeho, De Luttis, Gamble
998 to 999 - Ieli and Tualima
1000 - Mac Grealy

The thought of Dre Pakeho making the Wallabies, say in 2027, must also introduce the possibility of Malakye Enasio competing for the No 12 spot at about the same time. In the U20s world championship drubbing of England this year, Enasio played 12 with Pakeho at 13. Enasio was far and away the MOTM with multiple line breaks and just as many pilfers, while his defence was excellent.

Some great prospects coming through.

Hmm has Enasio even played a super Aus game? Pakeho already proven himself at super level. Might suffer 2nd season syndrome but doubt it.

Gamble wasn’t in the Aus a squad. I’d go with reimer over him any day. But we would have to cop injuries to Fraser and tizz and samu for that to happen.

Gamble had a pretty average Super Rugby season so fell down the pecking order, but then had a cracking couple of matches vs the Lions for Tahs and First Nations Pasifika XV. All 4 open sides are neck and neck

Unless Les Kiss has a completely different perspective on him to Schmidt, I suspect Gamble will need a full blown injury crisis at 7 to crack the wallabies. Aside from McReight and Tizzano in the squad, Reimer and Scott have both been preferred ahead of him the past 2 years, and all 4 of those guys are 26 or 25 to Gamble's 29.

Without a full blown crisis I suspect any depth opportunities will go to Reimer and Scott for now, and possibly younger candidates coming through, like Bryant, Durbridge, Langi or Robinson. It'd be different if McReight and Tizzano both got injured at the same time and they wanted someone for right now, but otherwise there's probably more chance Gamble signs overseas for '27 (current contract ends at the end of next season) than he gets capped.
