no scrums or lineouts I presume? Surely the union team when defending in their own half would just pilfer the ball every ruck.
I think you're understimating how much rugby union (at least some) players at a "rugby league school" will have played.

Just like half the Wallabies having played league to a pretty decent juniour standard

It's very different. Most in juniors can excel through being good athletes but when senior HS sides teams start just pick n go for phase after phase and throw body in the rucks it's a different world. It's not similar at all and you only have to watch Rugby players players play touch against Leagies to see how lost Rugby players are in League style attacks.

Wests Magpies beat Randwick in 2015 under the same rules. Union rules in the attacking half does favour the union side, but it's very continuous which suits the league conditioning, and the league side will make breaks from their own half and score some long range tries. Even when tackled they can sometimes go through 2 or 3 quick phases under union rules if they've got some momentum and the defence is going backwards. If they get slowed down they'll get turned over pretty easily, but there's a 60 second shot clock anyway, so you have to go fairly helter skelter in attack.

There's a potential hack for the union team to just camp themselves on the halfway line in defence - concede that first 50m every time to the league side but it would mean your defence is set when they have to attack under union rules. They'd presumably have to ban that tactic as I can't see how the league team would have a chance against it.

It's all pretty gimmicky and I can't imagine either code wants to risk losing to the other at the professional level. What seems more possible would be an Australia vs New Zealand hybrid match, with both teams a 50/50 mix of union and league players.

That's a very big backfield to defend with only 13 on the field

Fuck it one of each like the English did with the Clash of the Codes between Bath and Wigan

It's a schoolboy game, Barker v St Gregs I think. No doubt just a bunch of year 11s looking for a challenge, probably wouldn't even have made the news except Ivan Cleary come out and moronically endorsed it.

That's interesting actually as Greg's also plays Rugby. Though it is primarily a border sport so I don't know how much cross over there would be.

I was wondering what the point was until Clearly said - 'oh yeah I just had a thought bubble, imagine the Crusaders playing the Panfa'.....

Would people actually care? I know it does nothing for me and the result just dismissed by the loser as both have valid reasons why the concept is dumb.

Also, the fucking last thing Rugby need is someone to go out there and look decent under any facet of RL rules. They would have a contract offer by the time the game ended.

I watched the Union version of those games. The scrum has more or less uncontested after the first push in the first scrum. Safety first I guess but it meant that the Union side didn't get to use their full arsenal. Kind of defeated the purpose.

yeah I'm Harvey Norman on the whole concept. The leaguies cant scrum and someone could be killed, so unless scrums are fully contested I'm not interested.

You can keep digging on specifics as well. Not just scrumaging but if you had League rules and required players get back 10 in defence for at least half the field why the hell would Rugby bother select any of the current Locks and Props like AAA who wouldn't be able to sustain it for more than 10 mins.

You'd change your selections to backrowers and likely only keep Pollard, Bell and find smaller Props.

Again, diminishes the idea of it.

Amen, that stupid idea that Dean Lonergan came up with in 2020 was rightly squashed as soon as seriouls talk started. I was pissed NZR didn't tell him to take running jump at first talk, I didn't care how much everyone was going broke because of covid. Everyone knew it was dead in water and should of just got ignored.

The Albanese government has publicly acknowledged it is open to funding rugby union in the Pacific after a NSW Liberal senator raised concerns about the large discrepancy in money being allocated to rugby league in the region.

Funding of rugby union in the Pacific became heavily politicised earlier this year after a $600 million government package was announced to support rugby league in the region.
Rugby league is the national sport in Papua New Guinea, where the bulk of a $600 million funding package will be spent, but rugby union is entrenched in sporting culture across Samoa, Tonga and Fiji. The announcement sent rugby union executives in parts of the Pacific into negotiations with Chinese government officials.

Charlotte Blundell, an official from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Pacific economic and infrastructure division, told a Senate estimates hearing last week she was aware of a proposal being developed by Fiji, Tonga and Samoa that could lead to extra investment in rugby union.

“Although it’s self-evident that the NRL investment is larger over the next few years, the investment in things like community sports infrastructure is neutral,” Blundell said. “Ovals are in limited supply in these countries and all sports are able to utilise and benefit from some of the investment.”
Sources familiar with the plan but not authorised to speak publicly said the $150 million proposal had received sign-off from the Tongan and Fijian governments. It is pending a sign-off from the Samoan prime minister, Laaulialemalietoa Polataivao Leuatea Fosi Schmidt, who is currently receiving medical treatment in New Zealand.

Elizabeth Peak, head of DFAT’s Pacific office, said development funding was allocated based on the proposals it received.

“We would welcome Fiji, Samoa and Tonga to put in their proposal to us when they are ready to do so,” she said.
