Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Yet we do get a grant from NZ rugby to go towards equalising TV revenue from shared products such as super rugby and the Bledisloe.

Both nations are facing issues financially it is incumbent on us to work together to get the best possible return for the sport
Yes I said in my post there is a funding agreement as it applies to the broadcast agreement where one gives a grant to another but only if there’s a discrepancy between the two.

but to say they have a revenue sharing agreement over this test match, is misleading. Match-day revenue for the test match and domestic sponsorship rights are all held by NZRU.

I’m not saying I agree with the decision, but you can absolutely see why NZRU would protect their own interests first. If Stan were paying significantly more, then sure, RA might be able to use that funding distribution as justification to shift the match.

Wallaroos matches during RWC to be on FTA.. I'm assuming the Aus v USA will also be on Stan

news from across the ditch:

TVNZ is the new home of free-to-air grassroots rugby and will screen select NPC, Heartland Championship and Farah Palmer Cup matches from next year.
The broadcaster announced today it is New Zealand Rugby’s free-to-air provincial rugby partner in a multi-year agreement that starts with the 2026 season.
Sky TV also announced it has signed a new five-year deal with NZ Rugby covering All Blacks & Super Rugby matches through to 2030.

If reports are to believed, NZRU's previous agreement with Sky was for $111million pa, and the new deal is worth $85million pa....

not great news at all.....

Sky is understood to currently pay $111 million a year for its rugby rights under a five-year deal that was due to expire at the end of the year, and that was negotiated at a time when the pay-TV firm was facing intense competition from Spark Sport.

Negotiations over the terms of an agreement continued for long after that, however a sports industry source said the new deal including the Nations Championship was agreed at $85m a year, with Sky not budging on price.

I haven't seen figures, but only really read that there is still more tests etc to be added to the deal. No idea why or how.
I bloody pleased that is seems they gave up a little to have games of NPC FTA, that's good for game as that will get locals back watching their NPC teams etc. And best it helps NPC teams get sposorship.

Not what I've read. This figure includes the Nations Championship. Without it, Sky were apparently offering $75m.

You're pleased that the NZR deal is worth $26m per annum less. Ok.

In terms of matches not included; what they've said is there may be one off test matches like the All Blacks playing overseas outside of the current test match window which aren't included in this deal(Nations Cup, B&I Lions, Super Rugby, TRC etc are all included). These one-off matches would be negotiated as a case be case.. but given most of those matches like Chicago/Barbarians etc are outside/not conducive to local timezones, they're not likely to be big money spinners anyway, certainly not making up for the discrepancy/decline between deals.

That makes sense.

Also capped at 5 matches (for each the ABs and Black Ferns) over 5 years:
However, New Zealand Rugby has reserved the right to play up to five All Blacks and Black Ferns matches respectively overseas over the five-year term, outside of the scheduled competitions, to “support its efforts to increase its revenue base”.

Local rights to broadcast those matches would be negotiated on a “match-by-match basis”, Sky said.

No I pleased that NPC is on FTA, not what NZR they are getting . TV1 hasn't said what they paying NZR for NPC, but for PUs it great news, as they will be able to attract more sponsorship, the PUs wanted to do that when they proposed running NPC on their own a couple of years back.
Yep I know the Nations Championship is part of deal, but apparently there another 5 or so tests in air that are in the air not part of it.
I realise they not getting as much as they were, but pretty sure NZR will just have to survive. They another 5-8 mill a year that they not giving Aus anyway, so the buggers will have to make do! I sure they got enough jokers to have to learn how to budget, if not some of them will have to work harder.

They actually not usually part of deal anyway, extra tests they play (like Aussie wouldI assume) are usually done on split gate and tv revenue from game. So really they nothing much. It's a but of a furphy them really mentioning them, they always have had those extras.

If it were an option I'd take the SuperSport commentary over the Stan commentators sitting in a room 8 time zones away with the stadium sounding a little muffled

"If it were an option" - it literally is? Stan has had an alternate commentary feed for every game this year, except maybe the Fijian one.

Wild take though, while not perfect the Stan comms team are the best (english language) team in the world right now, with daylight second.
