There's a reddit thread up on 2013 v 2025 with some incomplete numbers - the Gagr archive has the full picture.

2013 Game 2 including regionals for a like-for-like is going to be around 1.5x807k = 1.2m +400k on Foxtel.

So around 1.6m total viewers.

2025 is around 800k + Stan (300k?)

The real story is probably just how much FTA viewing has declined in 12 years

Do we think Stan numbers would even be as high as 300k?

Anecdotally, within my rugby circles, because this tour is such a big occasion, most of us have either been attending the games in person, watching them as a group at a pub or watching them as a group at someone's house.

If that same rings true for many other rugby fans, I wonder if the Stan numbers are lower than expected.

My Stan is certainly heavily promoting women's international football, tennis, F1 and UFC, even though I only watch rugby on it - which probably shows where they see their priorities heading

Not sure if it's algo-specific, but Between Two Posts is the first thing that appears on my Stan Sports page, with Rugby being the first selectable item as well. They're still pushing it reasonably hard.

Also just a note that it isn't F1 and UFC, but Indycar and other combat sport leagues (e.g., PFL). Not of great importance, but very different in terms of current viewership and expected growth

I just checked and same for me at the moment (re Between Two Posts). Clearly I'm not much of a racing or combat sports fan!

Without doxxing the crap out of myself, but I was at the Regatta for a school reunion on Saturday night. We got booted downstairs after 9 and the place was packed. I could not move around the pub, everyone was watching the game and this is outside of the reunions.

Last time I witnessed that was the 2015 final at 3am in the Caxton!

Remember that pre Kayo, Rugby had the record for the highest rating on Foxtel for years. That audience has probably moved to Stan.

Nine 689k (BVOD 83k) reach 1.801m

The Wallabies series v the British and Irish Lions had aggregate ratings of 2.2373 million at an average of 791,000 per match on Nine. Stan audiences remain an enigma.

Consolidated numbers

* Game 1: 803,000 (BVOD 91k) Reach 1.761m
* Game 2: 881,000 (BVOD 107k) Reach 1.931m

That was my concern losing the series in 2 games. If we had won the 2nd Test I think that number would have gone up. It's easier to sell a decider than a revenge match.

A lot of the viewership numbers over time need to be adjusted for population changes. 2013 was around ~24mil vs the ~27mil today.

I wonder how many of the people making up that increase are from traditional rugby markets.

Rugby needs to work on being popular with everyone, but the reality is there are some markets that will be very difficult to infiltrate.

Maybe the Indian Rugby Premier League (RPL) could be a long term project to attract interest in non traditional markets

The nice thing about the RPL is that they have secured 6 years of funding which can help cement the league a bit.

Has anyone had the opportunity to listen to Stephen Moore on comms? I didn’t realise he was giving it a go and just saw he was doing the ABC radio coverage of the last year. Curious if he’s any good.

This clip certainly doesn't work well for him.
