Ive watched New over the last 15 seasons and they always seem to stuggle against Shore, regardless of where each side sits on the ladder.

In the past it was sometimes argued that gentilemen shouldnt compete against labourers or that amateurs shouldnt compete against professionals. There have always been logical reasons given to limit the competition. Today we welcome competition unrestricted, the game is the better for it.

The league scholarships provide a group of lads to the private school rugby competitions who raise the standard of the games played. So all the lads benefit from that. And some of the league lads may move to Rugby later...thats a challenge for Rugby Australia to address but at least they have a...

If talented lads play in their various home towns and competitions against lads of average ability then their talents wont evolve as much as if they play against other talented lads in competitions where every week is a grand final. Im not saying that the private schools had that sort of vision...

I hope you are correct about the section around sports scholarships disappearing. If the GPS want to market themselves as the premier school grouping then they need to show they are the best in every competitive experience...inside and outside the classroom. They have a brand to protect.

Newington have a very talented player list and whilst Heamasi would be fantastic to watch, and I hope we get to see him, the player list under the guidance of the new director of rugby should be more than capable of competing.

Based on the trials so far I would rank them Shore and Joeys Newington and Kings Scots and Riverview With any side capable of beating any other on a day.

My latest expectation based on results to date: 25% Scots, Joeys 20% Kings, Shore 16% Newington 14% Riverview Kings and Newington firming, Joeys and Shore blowing but shaping up as the closest competition in years. Any team not turning up with their "A" game in any week can be beaten.
