Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Yeah or the difference could be one was head to head with the AFL GF and the other was in clear air

You can argue that we should start playing mid-week test matches on a regular basis but I don't think this is something Rugby Australia is clamoring for. If this was an Australian home game I doubt we would have moved it to a weeknight.

I think suggesting NZRU isn't acting in our interests by having this game up against the AFL Grand Final is not particularly reasonable.

Cool, it’s unreasonable to put a game in a time slot that will draw maximum attention even World Rugby understands this moving the World Cup so it doesn’t clash with the NRL or AFL

Most of the country lives in not Auckland
A full third of the country lives in Auckland, and there isn't another population centre in New Zealand with even half as many people as Auckland. With the game in Auckland and that large a share of the market local it really doesn't matter which way the rest of the crumbs fall.

RA would want to…. But NZRU dictate the time-slot as it’s their home game and they’ve seemingly identified what will maximise exposure and matchday revenue for them.
I clearly understand they set the timeslot but nations that have a revenue sharing agreement we should work together to try and do what is commercially in the best interests of both nations

I can see a dust up at my local when the AFL gets turned off the screens at 3.00pm for the rugby. With the Swans rubbish (apparently) this year you hardly even see the AFL mentioned on the news so it will be just the southern state expats firing up.

I don’t disagree with the sentiment.

But It’s not really a revenue sharing agreement as it applies here though. NZRU shifting this match to a lesser value day/time would wear the entirety of the cost/lost revenue.

All match-day income goes to host union, as does sponsorship for the tournament as it applies in that country. There is a funding agreement as it applies to the broadcast agreement where one gives a grant to another but only if there’s a discrepancy between the two.

My understanding is the Warriors fanbase doesn't spread too far from Auckland. Doubtless there are people in Wellington, Christchurch, etc who watch their games but they're not 'New Zealand's team' as sticking New Zealand in the club's name would have people believe.

warriors are playing their ANZAC Day test in Wellington next year, the event was poached from Auckland….

I've got a big bunch of mates who live in Christchurch and they absolutely love their NRL, watch most games and take a passing interest in Super Rugby and even less in Bunnings Cup. All guys who watched every Super Rugby game 20 years ago

The Swans being belted by Geelong was on the news before the Wallabies result even got a mention.

It comes out of peoples mouths less though. I tend to think the Tahs or Reds doing well are more likely to swing recent AFL supporters back over. They still give the Wallabies a watch when it's on.

I love the idea of a mid-week Test. You can get non fans tuning in because they would rather it over 'The Voice' . SOO has proven that it works and people will go and watch. I know it has an entire media machine behind it and history now but you lock in for those couple hours on a weeknight when you are generally in a routine during the week and don't have all the potential distractions and plans of the weekend.
