Wallabies 2025

People are acting like he's opting to move to Siberia in exchange for a few dollars.

He's moving to a country that is the third most visited overseas destination by Australians. Clearly there's plenty to like about the place.

He's getting paid a lot more for a single season (and I believe an option to extend it to two) and gets a different (and probably awesome) life experience out of it.

To be fair if he had of said this a reason, no one would have cared

But he came out and said he wanted to stay but he's leaving because Joe Schmidt is leaving and he isn't confident that the next coach will like him, and people have pointed out that doesn't really seem like the most competitive mindset in the world considering the guy has been given more chances than most and never really delivered

The lesson here is clearly that next time he should be a lot less candid in a press conference about the reasons for his decision. Are any of the statements here unreasonable or problematic?

“Joe not being here after The Rugby Championship definitely made it tougher for me to stay, to be honest,” said Lolesio.

“Just the unknown of who the next coach will be. And me potentially, if I do stay, then go through the whole cycle again.

“I’m not putting it on Joe because I totally understand why he’s leaving. He’s got a family, he’s got to look after his family as well .I’m forever thankful for what he’s done for me and my career, especially last year. And I thanked him on that as well. So, yeah, that was probably one of the main reasons why I decided to head overseas.

“I believe everything happens for a reason as well. Without going through all those troubled, I wouldn’t say troubled times, but those times, I wouldn’t be the player I am today.

“It’s a tough one because I definitely wanted to stay, ideally.

“But it’s just the unknown of what the future holds. It’s a stressful time, not just for myself, but for boys off contract at the moment.

“I totally respect Joe’s decision to leave but as I’ve experienced so far with previous coaches, it didn’t end well for me. I bring it back to I’m happy it’s all over now and I’m just keen to rip it with the boys.”

Lolesio says he’s keen to keep his place in the squad for the British and Irish Lions tour but he’s received no guarantees from Schmidt that he will pick players who have opted to continue their careers overseas after this season.

Lolesio spoke to Schmidt before announcing his decision and the coach told him he would favour players who have decided to stay in Australia, but the door is not closed.

“He was pretty disappointed. It was a tough phone call. I thanked him for what he’s done for me. He’s been open about [Tom Hooper] and Langi [Gleeson] and not picking them,” Lolesio said.

“But look at them now. They’re probably up there with one of the best forwards in Australia for this season.

“He said something similar to me. But he also said the door’s never shut as well.

“He said ideally he wanted me to stay and he’s obviously got to factor in the future for boys that want to stay in Australia, which is, again, fair enough. But he also said that the window’s not fully closed as well. It’s the same as every year.

“I’ve just got to put my best foot forward for the Brumbies and then, you know, I can’t really control what happens with the Wallabies. If I get selected, then how good? But then, if I don’t, then it is what it is.

“I’m still contracted here until October. So, I’ll still be available. Especially now I can just really focus on being the best 10 I can be for the Brumbies.

“And then, hopefully, my performances for the rest of the season can put a good step forward for selection for that Lions series.”

“I’m 25 now. I had to weigh up what I want, what my family wants, what my partner wants and just tossing and turning,” said Lolesio.

“That’s why this process took pretty long. I know it’s not ideal but I’m fully happy and content. The next year is sorted out which is relieving and stress free.”

Not being able to service a mortgage while earning $450k? I'm sure Noah would have survived on that

I just don't think it's weird at all when people prioritize things like family and lifestyle over money. Especially when you will be earning good money regardless

Yeah, he'll be earning good money for a few years, and then...

But the reason players go for the money is specifically to prioritise things like family and lifestyle.

No one. When you don't know who that person is though and you need to make a decision it's going to have an impact on that decision.

When the other option comes with a lot more money you're going to want to know as much info as possible about the likely outcome if you do opt for the path that involves a lot less money.
Just so we’re clear. If he signed with RA it would be to play for the brumbies with a wallabies top up yeah. It wouldn’t have been bad coin but not as good as what he can earn in Japan. The only downside is the wallabies coach may not pick him. So he’s effectively signed with Japan because he didn’t like his chances of playing for the wallabies under a different coach. He has less chance playing of this playing for the wallabies whilst playing in Japan but at least he’s well compensated.
This is all fine but again what I have been arguing is from a wallabies fan pov this level of self doubt for a 30test wallaby is somewhat alarming. If I’m RA I’m thanking Noah, respecting his decision and moving on to the next bloke after the Lions (if he’s good enough to make the team in the BIL series). Hopefully he comes back a more assured player.

I think you're being ridiculous.

I don't think it has anything to do with self doubt whatsoever. He has already seen the whim of a previous Wallaby coach send him from first choice to outside of the squad for no particularly good reason. Clearly the coach matters and the uncertainty regarding who that is going to influence player's decision making over their contracts. He's needed to make a decision now and the absence of clarity over what the Wallabies picture looks like has impacted that decision. I don't think that is an unreasonable position whatsoever.

We don't know what his contract offer was from Rugby Australia but given Lynagh is already contracted until the end of 2026 and Donaldson is also only contracted to the end of 2025 and Rugby Australia doesn't know who the next coach will preference, presumably they aren't offering top dollar to Lolesio. We don't know how big the financial gap between the Japanese deal and the Rugby Australia deal is.

Would be far more fulfilling to show your grandkids your Wallabies memorabilia then to show them a yen note
Pfft no. Im going to assume you are around boomer age and you arent getting fucked in the arse by the ever worsening cost of living crisis.

Being able to secure your grandkids future is worth more than a fucking sporting jersey.

How am I being ridiculous lol? Ikitau didn’t trot out the same line when he signed overseas and he was rejected by Jones as well. Noah clearly has self doubt, justified or not. The bloke flat out said it doesn’t want the pressure of maybe being picked maybe not. I want a flyhalf that handles pressure! Who backs themself to beat the other players to be selected. It’s hardly ridiculous.

It's almost like they're two completely different players with two very different experiences in the national setup...

I can't believe this discussion has gone this many pages.

This shit flinging at Lolesio really comes across as petty, and dumb... really fucking dumb.

Harry Wilson was also snubbed by Eddie Jones but had no hesitation in resigning with RA without knowing who the next Wallabies coach will be. As did quite a few of our current Wallabies. No one begrudges Noah moving to Japan on a lucrative deal but to use the excuse that he didn’t resign with RA because he didn’t know who will replace Schmidt is a cop out.
