While big upping the optimistic sentiment that’s doing the rounds in Australian rugby, John O’Neil inadvertently (?) reminded us all of the rhinoceros head in the room;
“Deans and the new broom of coaches is a recipe that really should be used for the betterment of Australian rugby,”
Because let’s see;
Andy Friend at the Brumbies – new and exciting TICK
Chris Hickey at the Tahs – new and exciting TICK
Phil Mooney at the Reds – OK, new enough, TICK
John Mitchell at the Force – AH BUGGER.
While I’d like to believe it’ll have no restraint on the Force achieving to their potential this year and it might somehow ‘galvanize’ (bullshit bingo word du jour), I can’t see how having a coach hanging around who the whole team has publicly called a poisonous wanker can be a good thing.
Why he’s still there has got to be a mexican stand-off over money, but this is crazy. It’s sunk costs. The only answer is surely to cut your losses and the dead wood. Watch for this to happen after the first few crappy losses which every team (ok, apart from the Crusaders) always has, no matter how good their season over all. Fingers will point, doors will slam, and this time remain shut.
